Junior Jays finally hit gridiron; collect two wins

Finally the Guthrie Junior Jays football 7th and 8th grade teams got to hit someone besides themselves with their first games of the season. The teams started practice in the second week of August.

The Junior Jays were scheduled to play their first game last Thursday, at Shawnee, but Jim Thorpe Stadium was still under construction. The Jays game with Noble was then moved from Jelsma Stadium to the High School practice field due to wet conditions. Once the Jays arrived they were forced to wait for the Bears to show up as the game was delayed 20 minutes.

After all the delays, the 7th grade got a scoring boost from Kevin Blue on a speed option play and hit pay dirt on a 50-yard plus run. On the two-point try, JaRon Pryor scored from his tight end position to finalized the scoring. That is all the Jays defense needed to secure the win, 8-0.

“It looked like our first game of the season, but we are glad to get the win,” head coach Jason Rice said. “The offense was getting 5 and 6-yard runs a pop, but when you play short quarters like we do it makes it hard to score.”

“We had a good practice on Tuesday and on Wednesday we stayed indoors and did some work on the chalk board. Both helped us to prepare tonight,” Rice said.

8th grade head coach Jeff Ball, much like Coach Rice, was pleased with the overall effort his squad showed in a 38-14 win over the Noble Bears.

“The kids were refreshed, they stayed focus, and were ready to hit someone else in a different uniform,” Ball said.

Guthrie took advantage early and often from running back Beau Davis, who scored three times on the evening. Davis scored the game’s first points on a 27-yard run. Matt Guerrero added two touchdowns and Trey Wilson scored from 70 yards out for his first score of the season.

“Our offensive line played well tonight and I thought Tanner Meredith (quarterback) did a good job  of managing the game by making sure people were in their proper spots,” Ball said. ” I thought the defense played assignment football.”

After a slow start to get to their first game, the Jays will now prepare for three games in eight days. First up will be the make up game at Shawnee on Monday, followed by a date in Oklahoma City on Thursday, and finally returning back home to play El Reno on September 23rd.

Oklahoma linebacker could be deciding soon

Guthrie (Okla.) linebacker Kentrell Brothers has for now narrowed down his list of suitors to a couple of Pac-10 schools. Brothers will be heading to the University of Washington in a few days, and he talked to Devils Digest about his visit to Tempe this past weekend.

“The visit went pretty good,” Kentrell Brothers said. “I hung out with all the linebackers on the team, Brandon (Magee), Shelley (Lyons) and Tez (Vontaze Burfict). They showed me a really good time. They treated my mom well, my grandparents well. It was a good visit. It was 104 degrees but it’s humid in Oklahoma so if felt like 90 to me. The weather really wasn’t bad like people say it is.

“The coaches were amazing. I wasn’t the only player on an official visit, but they paid a lot of attention to me and my family. They sat with us when we ate, they were good people overall.”

Brothers mentioned in a previous interview how much he values education and how this will be the number one factor influencing his decision regarding which university he will attend. The linebacker’s mother really took the most to this aspect of their Tempe trip.

“The academic presentation they gave us really impressed her,” Brothers said.

Witnessing a defensive domination during the 54-9 ASU win over Portland State naturally caught Brothers’ eye and gave him a personal perspective on the Sun Devils’ defense.

“I really like how coach (Trent) Bray brings a lot of pressure with the quarterbacks.” Brothers said, “and how those players are flying around on the field. They really do a good job.”

Brothers acknowledged that his interest level in the Sun Devils, which wasn’t low to begin with, is higher now following this Tempe trip.

“This visit was better than the last one I took (unofficially in the summer),” Brothers explained. “Now that I got to see everything about the school I got to see what I really liked about the school and didn’t like about the school and there really wasn’t much I didn’t like about the school.

“The school looks more attractive to me now.”

The 6-1 215 Guthrie star plays on both sides of the ball, and as a junior he earned second team All-State honors with 95 tackles, 17 sacks, four interceptions, and a fumble recovery. On offense he had 62 catches for 1,122 yards and 12 touchdowns. He benches 250 lbs. and is being recruited as a WILL linebacker by ASU.

“Coach Bray likes how I play in space,” Brothers stated. “I’ll play wherever the coaches think I should be playing at. If I needed to learn a new position I think I would pick it up pretty fast. So if they want me to play inside or outside I’ll just work on perfecting that.”

Brothers will officially visit Washington on September 10th (he also visited Seattle unofficially), and while he does expect right now to take all five visits, he doesn’t know which three remaining schools he will trip to.

Other schools that have offered him are Arizona, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Tulsa, Baylor, Connecticut, Duke, Syracuse and Vanderbilt.

“I would like to make a decision right after that (Washington) visit,” Brothers remarked. “But if I can’t do that I’ll just take more time.”
