Week 10 playoff scenario’s
With the final week left of the regular season upon us, generally there is some drama as to playoff scenario’s, but that is not the case for districts 5A-1 and 5A-2.
Guthrie, Carl Albert, Ada, and Deer Creek are in the playoffs from 5A-1 with the Jays finishing first and the Titans second. Deer Creek hosts Ada this week and the winner finishes third and the loser finishes fourth.
In 5A-2, Lawton Mac, Ardmore, and Duncan are in the playoffs. Durant and Altus will try to land the final prestigious playoff spot. A Durant (4-5) win over Capitol Hill (1-8) secures them the fourth spot as does a loss with an Altus loss. Altus (4-5), who hosts Ardmore (6-3), will need a win and a Durant loss to make the playoffs.
The Durant/Altus qualifier will travel to district champion Guthrie in Week 11. The winner of Guthrie and Durant/Altus, in the first round, will play the winner of Bishop Kelley and Coweta in the second round. Kelley will travel to Coweta.
The loser between Ada and Deer Creek will go on the road and play 5a-2 district champ Lawton Mac. The winner of Ada and Deer Creek will go on the road to Ardmore for the first round.
One first round playoff game between the two 5A west districts has been set with Duncan traveling to Carl Albert.

How the Jays opponents did in Week 9
The Guthrie football program won their sixth consecutive game with a win over the Western Heights Jets. The 69-0 win secured the 5A-1 district championship.
Here are how the Jays opponents did in Week 9 of the high school season:
Duncan 7, Ardmore 21
Ardmore quarterback Trey Cohee had 140 yards passing and a hand in all three Ardmore touchdowns as the Tigers claim the second spot in 5A-2 and will host a first round game while Duncan will hit the road.
Ponca City 14, Bixby 41
The Bixby Spartans dominated the Ponca City Wildcats in the first half, building a 34-7 halftime lead before cruising to a 41-14 bench-clearing win.
Enid 14, Tulsa Union 51
Enid has not beaten Union since 1991 and the Redskins made sure the trend continued. Union now has won 91-straight games against district opponents.
Deer Creek 7, Carl Albert 31
It was the first ever meeting between the two schools and it was the Titans in a run away. Carl Albert secured a home play-off game. The Titans held a 24-0 lead at the half.
Ada 55, Noble 6
Noble dropped their seventh game in a row while Ada continued to hold out on hopes of finishing third in the district.
El Reno 48, Southeast 20
The Spartans dropped their sixth straight game of the season after starting out 3-0.
Guthrie Cross Country: State Champs, again
It was a running athletic director that came spreading the words: “We did it. We won.”
It was an announcement from Gary Boxley to boys cross country head coach Clay Tarter that sent the Guthrie contingent into a state of cheering and hugging at Mitch Park, in Edmond, Saturday afternoon.
The Guthrie Boys Cross Country team had won the 2010 Class 5A State title for their second in a row. The win is the seventh overall for the program, who has won more titles than any other sport in GHS history.

Guthrie edged out the favorite, Deer Creek, by four points 57-53. Bishop Kelley, who ran past the Jays last week for the regional title, finished third.
“Coach Boxley came up and told me and I was like whoa,” junior runner Jonathan Ogan said with wide eyes. “From the beginning we knew it was going to be us, Deer Creek and Bishop McGuinness and it just turned out in our favor.”
Guthrie placed four runners in the top 11, but it was a heroic performance from the No. 5 man, Caleb Murillo, that aided in bringing home another state championship trophy. Murillo, who finished 32nd overall, ran in just his fourth race of the season.
“We knew Murillo was getting better and that helped us win it,” Tarter said following the award ceremony. “He’s an athlete and we knew he was going to get better.”
“Last week (at regionals) he started too fast and he died. This week we told him not to start too fast and people will slow down around him and it worked.”
The headliners for the Jays were senior Zach Cates and Jon Ogan. The duo was consistent with top three finishes all season long . In his final high school run, Cates finished second overall with a time of 16:26.60 and was 12 seconds behind the overall winner Taler Buck of Deer Creek. Ogan finished third with a time of 16:42.
Hunter Sallee and Walker Cross also proved to be consistent over the season. Sallee ran a 17:06.46 for seventh place overall while Cross ran a 17:15.40 for 11th place and just missing out on an all-state status.
“He (Cross) worked real hard all summer. He went from being an alternate last year to being 11th place in state and had a great season,” a smiling Tarter said trying to find Cross among the Guthrie crowd.
“We have had a run of good kids and great athlete’s and things have gelled well,” Tarter said. “Coach Boxley, Coach (Mike) Longstreth and Coach (Dietrich) Hayes all work well together, but you got to have kids, that is the key and kids that are willing to believe in themselves and to do the work. They were willing to do that.”
The Jays have now won the last two cross country state titles along with the last two-track state championships.
“We had on our board all year to “Exceed Expectations” and they did that,” Tarter said.
Guthrie claims district championship with blow-out win
For the second time in 10 seasons the Guthrie BlueJays are labeled as district champions.
The Jays were needing just one win in their last two games to have the label as champs, but it took just seconds to realize they were on their way to a big night with a 69-0 win over Western Heights. Guthrie led 55-0 at the half and scored on their first eight possessions.
The 69-points is the most points scored since November 2nd, 2007 when the Jays shut-out Woodward by the same margin 69-0.
The Jays are now winners of their last six games and improve to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in district play. The Jets fall to 2-7 and 2-4 in the district. Click here to listen to defensive coordinator Kelly Beeby’s post game radio interview.
Carl Albert handled Deer Creek (31-7) to claim the second spot of the district. Deer Creek and Ada will play next week for the third and fourth playoff spot.
More than likely first round playoff scenario’s with next week to be played will be Guthrie hosting Durant, Carl Albert hosting Duncan, Lawton Mac hosting the loser between Deer Creek and Ada, and Ardmore hosting the winner of Deer Creek and Ada.
Guthrie wasted little time, literally, to score on their first two drives with their opening drive taking just 38 and their next taking 44 seconds. In total, the Jays had five drives that lasted less than a minute and saw nine different Jays find the end zone.
Alphonso Wilcots, Bryan Dutton, Kentrell Brothers, Devante McCully, Hunter Gates, Omari Ajanaku, Cody Reihs, and Chad Nash each had a score while Derrik Kelly added two. The offense piled up 476-yards of total offense while working with a short field all night.
The Guthrie defense continues to show why they are one of the elite by holding the Jets to just 32-yards of total offense. In the last two weeks, Guthrie has allowed a total of six-rushing yards.
The Jays have shut-out three of their last four opponents.
The defense intercepted the Jets three different times, including Marcus Ware’s first pick of the season. Freshman Donavan Jordan also got his first interception while fellow freshman Kai Callins got his fifth of the season.
Ware was named the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game.
Guthrie concludes the regular season with a trip to Speegle Stadium, in Oklahoma City, to take on the Southeast Spartans next Friday night. The Spartans are 3-6 overall and have dropped their last six games in a row after starting the season 3-0.
Junior High wrestling begins practices this week
The Guthrie Junior Wrestling program has been a key part in the recent success of the high school’s program. This season the Junior High is looking to add even more to the success.
Practice officially started this week at Faver Alternative School. “We don’t have our schedule done yet and some of it depends on football and when (head coach) Woodard can join us,” assistant coach Bryan Couch said.
Coach Woodard serves as the defensive line coach for the Guthrie Football program.
El Reno no match for freshmen; Noble upcoming
The opening possession for the Guthrie Freshmen football squad did not go as plan against El Reno, but that was about all that didn’t go as plan.
Quarterback Reed Roberts was hit from behind when he released his pass, but afterwards Roberts collected himself and passed for three-passing scores and one rushing score, from 15-yards out, en route to a 40-6 win in El Reno.
Game pictures have been uploaded from various games. Click here to view.
Donavan Jordan collected two of the passing scores while Bailey Nichols caught the other.
The offense got one more score from running back Adrian Smith, a move-in from Coyle, on a 30-yard zone play.
“The defense played really great,” Roberts said.
Defensive back, Jacob Chappell, picked off an Indian passed and hit pay dirt from around midfield to continue the one-sided game.
The freshmen will now play for the conference championship, on Monday, against the Noble Bears. Guthrie will be looking for some revenge after suffering a 20-14 setback to the Bears on October 11th.
The Bears quarterback also serves as the varsity quarterback. Kick time is set for 7:00 at Western Heights.

Jets are grounded but prefer the air
Throughout the 2010 season, Guthrie has been a balanced team. The same can be said for the Western Heights Jets.
Despite a 2-6 record (2-3 in district play), Western Heights has proved they can move the ball down field, but have failed to put more points on the board with stalled out drives.
The Jets defeated Southeast last week, 36-27, for their second district win and have not been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Although, they are bleak by needing to win out with wins over Guthrie and El Reno, in addition to, having Ada drop their final two games with Noble and Deer Creek.
Western Heights is averaging 321-yards of offense by rushing for 157-yards per game and 164-yards passing. The Guthrie offense averages 381-yards with 186 on the ground and 194 in the air.
The heart and soul of the Jets offense runs through senior quarterback Kenneth Mayfield. Mayfield has piled up 1,646 total yards of offense, including 1,254 yards in the air through eight games.
Mayfield, a stand-out on the basketball court, has good speed with a strong-arm and has shown likes to take his chances down field. His favorite target is fellow senior Juwan Cubit, who has brought in 29-catches for 442-yards and six scores.
The ground game is controlled by Mayfield and running backs Darius Young and Devonte Henderson. Young leads the team in carries and yards with 127 touches for 629-yards to go with eight rushing scores. Henderson is the dual threat with 336-all purpose yards with two receiving scores.
The Guthrie offense, who will be looking to improve off of last week below average out put against El Reno, will work against a Jets defense that is allowing 48-points a game and have allowed five opponents to score at least 40 or more points in each game.
It will be Senior Night for Western Heights, who will recognize seven seniors before the game. The game can be heard on 105.1 FM and Guthrie Sports Page.

Guthrie rushing defense tops in Oklahoma
Guthrie head football coach Rafe Watkins said the lost to Enid back in Week 3 helped his team and coaching staff take a step back and see how they approached things.
Both the offense and defense has helped the Jays to win five straight games since then, including a win over then No. 7 Deer Creek and then No. 3 Carl Albert. The offense has been sufficient by averaging 31-points in the winning streak, but the defense has taken things to a whole new level.
The BlueJay defense continues to be ranked near the top in the state in all categories as they have in the last several seasons, and in the last few weeks they have been darn near perfect.
In the five game winning streak, the defense has allowed just three scoring drives with two of those coming to Carl Albert. In total, the Jays are allowing 5-points a game in district play with Western Heights and Southeast remaining, who are a combined 2-8 in district play.
In the five district wins, the defense has allowed 97-yards of total offense.
The Titans gained 67-yards rushing and Deer Creek managed only 63 rushing yards against the defense. Both teams entered the game averaging 240 and 248-yards rushing respectively. In the Ada, Noble, and El Reno games combined, all three teams managed just 38-yards on the ground.
The result – the best rushing defense in the state regardless of class.
The defense is allowing 47 rushing yards a game in the eight games combined this season and easily ranks No. 1 in Class 5A. Duncan is second with allowing 118 per game.
The passing defense is excelling as well by holding opponents to just 98-yards throwing a game. When you add up the rushing and passing yards, Guthrie ranks as the best in 5A and second in the state behind Douglass.
A big part of the defense is junior linebacker Landry Chappell and his 115 tackles which ranks him first in 5A and seventh in the state. Not to far behind is Luke Davis, Marcus Ware, and John Clark, who all have 71 tackles and are in the top five in 5A.
Kentrell Brothers continues to lead 5A and the state with 14 sacks and younger brother, Richard Brothers, has eight. Freshman Kai Callins has four interceptions and is tied for first in 5A.
Felix Scott has 62 tackles despite playing on the defensive line. Trevor Blassingame and Donavan Jordan have been early surprises despite their young age.
The defense will have two more weeks to prepare for the playoffs before they will be counted on to help pursue a state title.

Playoff scenario’s for Class 5A-1 in Week 9
With the final two weeks left of the high school football season its time to look at some possible scenario’s as to what may happen this week in Class 5A-1 games.
Caution: Week 9 scenario’s reading can cause headaches. Week 10 scenario’s is generally a little easier to take in.
Week 9 games:
Guthrie at Western Heights, Carl Albert at Deer Creek, Noble at Ada, Southeast at El Reno
Guthrie win – District Champion
Western Heights win – Guthrie district champion with win over Southeast next week; Western Heights would need a win over El Reno (week 10) and would need Ada to lose their final two games to make playoffs.
Carl Albert win and Ada win– Carl Albert is 2nd in district and Deer Creek and Ada play for 3rd and 4th next week. Western Heights eliminated.
Deer Creek win and Ada win – All three (Deer Creek, Carl Albert, and Ada) could finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th with outcome of Week 10 games and possible point scenario. Western Heights eliminated.
Deer Creek win, Ada loss, and W. Heights loss – Guthrie 1st, Deer Creek 2nd, Carl Albert 3rd, Ada 4th.
Deer Creek win, Ada loss, and W. Heights win – Week 10 scenario’s to follow with three teams (Guthrie, Carl Albert, and Deer Creek) placing from first to third and two teams (Ada and Western Heights) for fourth place.
Week 10 games:
Guthrie at Southeast, Noble at Carl Albert, Ada at Deer Creek, Western Heights at El Reno
