Jets are grounded but prefer the air

Throughout the 2010 season, Guthrie has been a balanced team. The same can be said for the Western Heights Jets.

Despite a 2-6 record (2-3 in district play), Western Heights has proved they can move the ball down field, but have failed to put more points on the board with stalled out drives.

The Jets defeated Southeast last week, 36-27, for their second district win and have not been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Although, they are bleak by needing to win out with wins over Guthrie and El Reno, in addition to, having Ada drop their final two games with Noble and Deer Creek.

Western Heights is averaging 321-yards of offense by rushing for 157-yards per game and 164-yards passing. The Guthrie offense averages 381-yards with 186 on the ground and 194 in the air.

The heart and soul of the Jets offense runs through senior quarterback Kenneth Mayfield. Mayfield has piled up 1,646 total yards of offense, including 1,254 yards in the air through eight games.

Mayfield, a stand-out on the basketball court, has good speed with a strong-arm and has shown likes to take his chances down field. His favorite target is fellow senior Juwan Cubit, who has brought in 29-catches for 442-yards and six scores.

The ground game is controlled by Mayfield and running backs Darius Young and Devonte Henderson. Young leads the team in carries and yards with 127 touches for 629-yards to go with eight rushing scores. Henderson is the dual threat with 336-all purpose yards with two receiving scores.

The Guthrie offense, who will be looking to improve off of last week below average out put against El Reno, will work against a Jets defense that is allowing 48-points a game and have allowed five opponents to score at least 40 or more points in each game.

It will be Senior Night for Western Heights, who will recognize seven seniors before the game. The game can be heard on 105.1 FM and Guthrie Sports Page.

Series History since 2001:
