Lady Jays golf finishes tough state rounds

The Lady Jays golf team improved 11 shots on day two of the Class 5A state tournament, but it was not good to move up in the standings.

Guthrie shot a 481 on day one at the Bailey Ranch course in Owasso and on day two shot a 471 to finish 12th in the 12 team field. Bishop McGuinness won the team event with a two-day score of 646.

All was not lost as Lady Jay McCandren Lewis finished sixth overall in the individual contest with a 163. She finished day one tied for sixth.

Day One Results

The Guthrie Lady Jays golf team made their fourth straight state tournament on Monday, but did not get the day one results they were looking for.

A season ago, Guthrie finished sixth overall after finishing day one in seventh place. Yesterday the ladies found themselves in 12th place in the 12 team field. The Guthrie golfers scored a 481 with McGuinness leading the charge (319) on the two-day 36 hole competition.

However, all is not gloom and doom for the Lady Jays as McCandren Lewis is tied for sixth in the individual race.

Lewis posted an 80 on the Bailey Ranch course in Owasso and is 11 strokes behind the leader Megan Blonien of Altus. Last year, Lewis finished fifth overall at Silverhorn golf course.

For the Lady Jays, Linzi Thomas finished with a 130, Kelsey Walker a 136 and Tessa Wakefield scored a 135.

Lady Jays Golf going back to state

The OSSAA announced the tee times for the upcoming girls golf state championships for next Monday, at Bailey Ranch, in Owasso. In the field will be the Guthrie Lady Jays.

Guthrie posted a team score 393 for a sixth place in the 12 team regional at Lincoln West Golf Course in Oklahoma City. The sixth place finish was just enough to qualify for next week’s state appearance, in which, will mark the fourth straight year for the Lady Jays to qualify for state.

Altus, who finished as state runner-up last year, finished as regional champions with a team score of 296. Deer Creek (315) was second while defending champion Duncan (324) was third.

Leading the way for Guthrie head coach Mike Longstreth was McCandren Lewis with a score of 80. A season ago, Lewis won the regional and was fifth overall at state with a two-day score of 157 at Silverhorn Golf Course.

Altus golfer Chelsea McCuistion took top regional honors with a 68 and was followed by teammate and defending 5A champion Megan Blonien, who finished with a 71.

Joining Lewis for the two-day, 36 hole run will be seniors Cristina Valdez, Kelsey Walker, junior Tessa Wakefield, and sophomore Linzi Thomas.

A season ago at state, the Lady Jays finished sixth overall with a score of 742 and in 2009 they finished seventh overall.

Guthrie finishes sixth in state; Lewis fifth overall

The Guthrie Lady Jays golf team completed their second and final day of the Class 5A State Tournament and although a team title did not come their way they improved one spot from day one.

Head coach Mike Longstreth’s Lady Jays finished sixth overall, with a team score of 742, after falling to seventh place after day one at Silverhorn Golf Course.

Duncan won their third straight championship with a team score of 668. McAlester, who finished third overall, won the 5A academic championship.

Leading the charge for Guthrie was sophomore McCandren Lewis who shot a 78 for a 157 total after a first round 79. Lewis performance was fifth best individually.

Altus’ Megan Blonien won her second straight title by shooting a 147.

Overall, all five Lady Jays improved their scores on day two and as a team improved a whopping 33 shots. Senior Kacey Acker shot an 86 after an opening 89, Jasmine Linville carded a 101 after a 108, Kelsey Walker had the biggest turnaround with a 17 shot improvement with a 97 and a 114 on day one, and Linzi Thomas improved five strokes and shot a 100 on the final day.

Lewis near the top of 5A state leaderboard

The Guthrie Lady Jays golf team are playing in their second straight 5A state tournament and are looking a familiar situation.

Head coach Mike Longstreth’s Lady Jays shot a team score of 381 and currently are in seventh place 42 shots behind Altus heading into the final day of competition. Duncan, who has won the last two state titles, holds the second spot and trails Altus by three shots.

In last season’s state tournament Guthrie was in sixth place going into the final day before placing seventh.

Leading the way for the Lady Jays is sophomore McCandren Lewis. Lewis shot a 79 in windy conditions at Silverhorn Golf Course and finds herself tied for third place overall.

McAlester’s sophomore Julia Wynn shot a 72 and is followed by Altus’ Megan Blonien 76. Lewis is tied with Claremore’s Whitney Holcut.

Lady Jays senior Kacey Acker scored an 89, Jasmine Linville shot a 108, Kelsey Walker hit a 114, and Linzi Thomas walked in the club house with a 105.

Final round is set for Friday morning.

Lady Jays Golf: STATE BOUND

For the third year in a row the Class 5A girls state tournament will host the Guthrie Lady Jays golf team.

Head coach Mike Longstreth’s Lady Jays finished third overall in the regional held at Crimson Creek Golf Course, in El Reno, to qualify for next weeks state tournament to be held at Silverhorn Golf Course, in Oklahoma City.

Duncan came away with top regional honors followed by Altus. Altus shot a team 343 and Duncan a 357.

Sophomore McCandren Lewis defeated the entire field to win the individual honor by shooting a 77. In the process, Lewis defeated the Class 5A returning state champion, Chelsea MCuistion, from Altus.

Team members include Lewis, Kacey Acker, Jasmine Linville, Kelsey Walker and Linzi Thomas.

Lewis splashed onto the scene a season ago and helped aid the Lady Jays back to state for the first time in many seasons. Last season at state, Lewis had the low score for the Lady Jays with scores of 79 and 84. Guthrie finished seventh with Duncan winning the 5A title.

This years tournament will be held May 5th and 6th. The Lady Jays will tee of at 10:08. Guthrie will be the No. 4 seed.

Joining Guthrie in the field will be Duncan, Coweta, El Reno, Pryor, Tahlequah, McAlester, Deer Creek, Claremore, Altus, Bishop Kelley, and Carl Albert.

Girls golf team with a top five finish

The Lady Jays golf team had another strong top five finish outing by participating in the Cushing Tournament. A season ago, Guthrie finished second in the same tourney.

McCandren Lewis finished in a tie for second place and Kacey Acker fell into eighth place to help the team finish fourth overall. Jasmine Lewis, Kelsey Walker, and Linzi Thomas also competed.

Lewis finished second earlier this season in the Lady Jays Invitational.

The Suburban Conference tournament is set for Monday at The Greens Golf and Country Club before traveling to Enid on Thursday.
