Jays take third in Midwest City; Deer Creek looming

The Guthrie wrestling team fell short of their first tournament win of the season at the Carl Albert Tournament, but a win Thursday evening will quickly erase that memory.

Guthrie held the team lead after day one at Carl Albert, but were unable to hold onto it with a third place finish behind Lawton MacArthur and Altus. The tournament was filled with 5A schools and was a good luck at what me may see at the state tournament.

Guthrie now switches their attention to a Thursday dual on the road when they take their third ranking up against 4th ranked Deer Creek with the winner moving on to Dual State in February. The anticipated dual will take place inside the new Deer Creek middle school gym.

The Antlers took advantage of the smaller weights in last years dual to advance to state with a 35-30 win.

It’s unclear who we may see up against each other until mat time, but a handful of potential match-ups appear to be promising, including a Bryan Dutton-Cole Pacheco 145-pound rematch. Dutton took last years match, in Guthrie, 2-0. Another promising dual could come down to John Davision and Tyler Follis. Last year, Davison used a second period escape to win 1-0.

Carl Albert Tournament

The BlueJays put five in the Titan finals (Timothy O’Connor, Bryan Dutton, Devin Bilyeu, Landry Chappell and John Davison), but were able to pull out one winner in Dutton.

Dutton allowed Kenyon Weldon all three of his points and captured the 145 pound championship with a 7-3 win to finish the weekend with a 4-0 record. Dutton has won all three tourney’s he has participated in this season (Duncan, Cushing and Carl Albert).

Freshmen Alex Nelson also won his final match with a pin in the third period over Matt Maxwell of Durant to capture third place. After a scoreless first period, Nelson built a 1-0 lead going into the third period.

It was a showcase of championship matches at 220 and 285 pounds. The 220-pound dual between Chappell and Chickasha’s Jacoby Brown’s was a repeat of last years state championship match. This time around, Brown got the better end with a pin late in triple over time.

At 285, John Davison, much like Chappell, saw a familiar opponent in the finals. Davison met up with Ardmore’s Evan McGee after the two met at last years regional and state tournament. Davison scored the regional win while McGee took the state win and eventually won the state championship. Fast forward to this year, the two heavy weights did not disappoint in the finals with McGee scoring the 3-1 win.

In finals other finals action, Timothy O’Connor took a 3-1 setback to finish the weekend with a 3-1 record while Bilyeu ran into perhaps one of the state’s best regardless of weight class in defending state champion Keilan Torres of Altus. Torres controlled the match to give Bilyeu his only loss of the weekend (4-1).
