The Guthrie Freshmen football team executed their two-point conversions and the El Reno Indians did not. That was the difference for the Jays season opening win at Jelsma Stadium on Monday night.

The Jays took advantage of a 103-yard rushing performance from Gavin Brison, including both touchdown scores in the first half. He finished with seven receiving yards and 21-yards on punt returns.

Guthrie got on the score board first when Brison sprinted 49-yards to pay dirt on the game’s fourth offensive play. Troy Branson ran in the 2-point conversion.

El Reno pulled out a big play themselves midway through the second quarter when their running back took off for 59-yards to pull within two, 8-6, after the 2-point try failed.

However, the lead increased on the next possession.

Out of a time-out, Brison dashed for a 59-yard score to give the Jays a 16-6 halftime lead.

The score remained the same until the middle of the fourth quarter when the Indians scored on a running play from 52 yards to make it a 16-12 game.

El Reno would not go quiet and had one last chance to steal the game away on the game’s final drive.

Following a Guthrie fumble, El Reno set up camp at the Jays 9-yard line. On first down, El Reno managed one-yard and followed that with an incomplete pass on second and third down. On fourth-and-goal, the Indians went with an option play to the far side of the field, but Branson drove the ball carrier out of bounds to preserve the win.

Junior Varsity ends in 0-0 tieĀ

Guthrie and El Reno could not find the end zone in junior varsity action. Both teams had several chances in the fourth quarter with deep ball pass attempts, but came up empty.

Both teams were victims of multiple turnovers.
