Guthrie alum and current Missouri Tiger linebacker Kentrell Brothers was named the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel was named the Offensive Player of the Week.

KentrellBrothers, a 2011 GHS graduate, recorded a career-high 10 tackles on Saturday at 7th-ranked Georgia and helped keep the potent Bulldog offense in check for most of the day as part of Mizzou’s 41-26 road win.

The weekly honor is the first of Brothers’ career at Missouri and marks the first time a Mizzou player has earned the award since last season (Sept. 15, 2012).

The SEC website explained Brothers, a red-shirt sophomore, had a tackle for loss as part of his career day, and he also made an interception with less than a minute left in the game to help seal the Tiger victory. The interception was Brothers’ third of the season (tying him for the team lead), and it gave him an interception in two consecutive games.  All three of his INTs have come in MU’s three road games (one INT each at Indiana, at Vanderbilt and at Georgia).

IKENTRELLBROTHERS11_16200Bn 2012, as a redshirt freshman, Brothers played in 11 games, amassing 14 tackles on the year and breaking up one pass. In the prior season, he was forced to sit out the year after sustaining a season-ending leg injury during a pre-season scrimmage.

Brothers was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the state by the Oklahoman. He caught 63 passes for 1,304 yards and 18 touchdowns and also had 100 tackles and 19 sacks on defense for the BlueJays. Brothers finished his career with 156 receptions for 2,984 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Brothers is the all time leading receiver in Guthrie history for both a season and a career, along among other numerous GHS records.
