There will be some new teams on the football schedule when the Guthrie BlueJays take to the gridiron for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The Jays will also continue to see some very familiar schools in the district portion of the schedule.

Guthrie FootballHead coach Rafe Watkins confirmed with Guthrie Sports Page that the Jays have agreed to play a home and away series with Sand Springs beginning in 2014. The non-district game will be played in week three of the season.

Guthrie and Enid were not able to finalize their series over the summer. The Jays and Plainsmen will play Sept. 20 for the fourth straight season. Guthrie hold a 2-1 advantage in those years.

After missing out on the playoffs for three straight years, Sand Springs qualified for last year’s 6A playoffs with an 8-3 campaign. Prior to 2012, the Sandites were 9-21 from 2009 to 2011.

The BlueJays will continue to play Duncan (week one) and Ponca City (week two) for the next two seasons to complete the non-district schedule.

Meanwhile, in the district schedule, it appears 5A-2 will again be one of the best districts in all of the state.

Joining the Jays for the next two seasons will be Carl Albert, McGuinness and Deer Creek. All four teams are in the top five preseason rankings for the upcoming season. Joining them will be Guymon, Southeast, Western Heights and Piedmont.

Piedmont will make the jump to 5A football for the first time after spending several seasons in Class 4A.

Leaving the stellar district will be El Reno and Northwest Classen. Both will move south to 5A-1.
