Asia Johnson claims 5A state championship

Guthrie High School’s Asia Johnson stamped her name in the Guthrie legends category after she was the first runner to cross the finish line at the Class 5A track state tournament.

Johnson needed 15.27 seconds in the 100 meter hurdle dash to claim the state championship at Yukon High School on Saturday afternoon. The junior out ran her Shawnee opponent by sixth-tenths of a second to win the title.

In the preliminary run, the Shawnee sprinter was .24 quicker (15.39/15.15).

In the previous week at regionals in Ponca City, Johnson ran a 15.88 to claim the regional championship.

The Lady Jays overall finished 15th overall with 12 points as Deer Creek not only won the girls title, but the boys title as well.

Susie Unger claimed fifth place in the 300 meter run with a time of 47.58.

In the 1600 meter run, Lauren Toney rounded out the top 10 with a time of 5:47.33. Just behind her was freshmen Lexi Hastings with a time of 5:50.98.

For the BlueJays, it was the 4 x 200 relay team that finished as runner-ups to Booker T. Washington in a timely fashion of 1:30.64. The Hornets were just seconds faster at 1:28.92.

In the individual races, Lewis Robinson and Win Hughes both came away with fourth place finishes. Robinson, a sophomore, ran a 15.23 in the 110 meter hurdles while Hughes, also a sophomore, needed 49.76 to cross the line in the 400 meter run.

Calvin Parker, junior, had a top 10 finish when he ran a 11.08 in the 100 meter dash to capture sixth place.

The Jays finished sixth overall in the team standings.
