On National Signing Day many high school athletes picked and choose their school by when they would get playing time or perhaps what system best for their skills, but Guthrie senior Evan Plagg made a much different decision.

The 6’4 offensive lineman Plagg made a late decision to pass up a full-ride scholarship to Central Oklahoma and made the decision to walk-on at Tulsa University for the simple fact they give him a great opportunity in the classroom.

Plagg, who wants to be a Petroleum Engineer, made the decision just hours before the signing day.

“He felt Tulsa was the best thing for him even though it is a walk on situation football wise, but for academic reasons that was most important and we all know that is the most important thing,” Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins said.

Watkins said in his 12 years at Guthrie, Plagg is the one player that truly put his education goals first before his athletic goals.

Tulsa offensive line coach Denver Johnson and fellow Guthrie lineman Blake Belcher, who just completed his red-shirt season, made the call to Plagg and offered the invite.

Watkins said despite not having an athletic scholarship, he feels Plagg has room for growth and is eager to see how he finishes up once he hits the weight room and the food plan that he will go through.

Plagg, who was named to The Oklahoman’s All-City second team, was UCO’s top offensive lineman prospect on their board.
