Langston signs Guthrie’s game filmer to scholarship

Bookmark and Share

Guthrie head football coach Rafe Watkins was surrounded by college coaches and one particular coach spotted him quickly and wanted to be sure one of his top recruits had not committed to another school. Turns out the coach was not talking about a player, but a high-profile filmer.

Cayman WebsterYes, a game filmer.

Dwone Sanders will begin his first season at Langston University and believes he has brought in a key piece to his new program in Guthrie senior Cayman Webster.

Turns out the day Webster was getting after a freshmen filmer for missing a few plays of the BlueJay scrimmage, this past August in Langston, resulted in a full tuition scholarship to Langston.

Webster told the up and coming freshmen, “you don’t miss any plays, you don’t miss any plays.” That statement was overheard by a Langston coach, who was watching the boys in pads down on the gridiron, and from there the connection was made.

“The coach said this kid knows what he is doing and that I should come to school here (Langston) and film for them. I talked to my dad that night, but did not think anymore about it,” Webster said.

In the end, the coach meant what he said.

“If we want to get better at Langston with our film production we need to get great guys and it is worth a scholarship to us to get this young man because this is how you build excellence,” Sanders said.

Cayman Webster“He does not claim to be good at football or shooting a hoop. This is what he is great at and because he is good at it we are going to make sure that he is going to continue his education at Langston.”

Webster, who was surrounded by his family, coaches and fellow students inside the Guthrie Library, signed his letter to become a Lion. Also in attendance was a Langston basketball representative. You see, the basketball program wants Webster to help them out as well.

“It’s a perfect opportunity. I would never think I would be able to go to college. I always thought I would be going to the marines or army,” Webster said with a huge smile.

“I’m going to try to do my best and I appreciate the opportunity.”

It’s safe to say not many have ever signed a letter on National Signing Day to become a game filmer, but Watkins believes it may be the start of something in the future.

“In this day and time with the computer age that we live in, never thought I would see the day that I would see a kid getting a scholarship to go and film for a team, but that is how important the filming of the practices and games have gotten,” Watkins said.

Watkins will now have to reevaluate the talent on the field with the outgoing seniors, but now will have to try to replace Webster from up in the press box.
