Guthrie and Norman was the final game on the first day of the 53rd Annual McGuinness Classic and it deserved the spotlight as the BlueJays won a thriller in overtime.

BasketballThe Jays missed a oppurtunity to win the game in regulation at the buzzer, but outscored the Tigers 5-2 in the fifth period to win 58-55.

Guthrie has now won two straight games and improves to 3-6 and advances to the semifinals to take on the host Bishop McGuinness Fightin’ Irish with a 6 p.m. tip in Oklahoma City. The game can be heard on Guthrie Sports Page beginning at 5:50 p.m.

The BlueJays needed to rally from a nine-point deficit, 20-11, in the second quarter to rally for the win. A big part of the rally was benefited by outside shooting from the Jays when they connected on five 3-point shots, including three in the fourth quarter.

After Jeremy Brown drilled two free throws to tie the game at 53-all, Norman on the following possession missed a shot in the paint with 18 seconds to allow Guthrie one final chance in regulation. Brown took the three-point shot from the right side, but came up short to send the game to overtime.

In the final period, senior guard Jerrick Warren collected three of the team’s five points en route to a team high 16 points.

Norman’s Cooper Clark still had one opportunity to tie the game and perhaps send it to a second overtime when his 3-point shot was short, but was fouled and sent to the line to shoot three free throws to tie the game with sixth-tenths of a second. However, the sophomore guard missed his first two attempts and was forced to missed the last chance and the Jays were able to secure the ball.
