El Reno too much in second half for Jays in season opener

It was the start the Guthrie boys basketball team wanted and it was the ending the El Reno squad had wanted in their conference match-up Tuesday evening.

BasketballGuthrie built up a lead as much as nine points in the second quarter, but El Reno grabbed and held onto their first lead in the third quarter en route to a 51-46 win to spoil the debut of Guthrie head coach Tim Flanigan.

The Jays jumped out to a 5-0 lead and eventually lead 22-13 with 4:23 until halftime. The Indians cut the deficit down to two at the half, 24-22, as the Jays struggled from the field by scoring on just two field goals on lay-ups.

Guthrie increased their lead back to six with back-to-back buckets by Jerrick Warren and Justice Irvin to begin the third quarter. However from that point, the Indians outscored the Jays 16-6 in the final five minutes of the quarter.

El Reno held a lead as many as eight, 36-28, only to see Guthrie rally to the game up at 42-all with 4:09 to play in the game. However, El Reno hit back-to-back three-point shots to prove to be the difference.

Warren led the Jays in scoring with 17 points followed by L’liott Curry’s 13 points as the Jays to fall 0-1 while El Reno stays perfect at 3-0.
