Jays break school record with road win in El Reno

The Rafe Watkins era has brought many new records for the Guthrie High School football program and with the latest win – two new records were obtained.

Guthrie set a school record of 21 straight games without a loss with a 43-7 road win in El Reno. The BlueJays also have won 20 straight district games.

Those streaks will be on the line when undefeated and third-ranked Deer Creek comes to Jelsma Stadium for a Thursday night showdown, that will have the state of Oklahoma’s attention.

The BlueJays broke their 20-game winning streak that was obtained in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

The top-ranked Jays are now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the district. El Reno falls to 2-5 and 1-3.

The Guthrie defense again proved to be stellar by holding the Indians to just 54 yards of offense while the BlueJay offense put together 197 yards.

El Reno proved to be their worse enemies at times when they fumbled five times (losing three), eight penalties for 81 yards and miscues in the kicking game. Guthrie took advantage of those miscues and turned them into 29 points.

The BlueJays took the game’s opening drive 80 yards to the end zone on 19 plays and taking 8:26 off the game clock. On the drive, the Jays were 3-for-3 on fourth down conversions before four-year starting quarterback Bryan Dutton scored from 4-yards out. Dutton later scored in the third quarter to finish with two touchdown runs on the night.

After forcing El Reno to a three-and-out, the Jays were back in the end zone early in the second quarter when senior running back J.T. McFadden took a short pass reception and turned it into a 48-yard touchdown score to go up 14-0. McFadden later scored on an 11-yard run for his second score and on his way to the F&M Bank Offensive Player of the Game.

Again, Guthrie forced the Indians to go three-and-out, but on the punt the Indians earned 6-yards giving the ball to the Jays at the El Reno 23-yard line.

The BlueJay offense stalled on three plays, but junior kicker Luis Morales drilled a 44-yard field goal to give the Jays a 17-0 lead with 10 minutes to play til the half.

It was just the second time the field goal unit had come onto the field this season. The first field goal attempt was blocked last week against Carl Albert.

Morales later kicked a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter and finished with 11 points by scoring on all five extra point attempts.

After leading 24-7 at the break, Guthrie took advantage of two El Reno snap miscues that resulted in 10 points, including junior Trey Smith’s 3-yard run to cap the scoring early in the fourth quarter.

The BlueJay defense was stellar, despite allowing a 40-plus yard pick-up by Donnie Everheart, but in the end held the Indians to just 18 yards on the ground.

Junior Blaze Hastings not only was on numerous tackles, but jumped on a loose football in the end zone for the two-points safety. The score was set up by the special teams when junior Zonte Veasley blocked an El Reno put and senior Vincent Norris recovering the ball at the 4-yard line.

Hastings was named the F&M Bank Defensive Player of the Game.
