Guthrie entertains Guymon, Homecoming

Bookmark and Share

The Guthrie BlueJays and Guymon Tigers will play for the first time in some time as the Tigers get set to play for the first time in Class 5A. Not only are the Tigers jumping up a class, but jumping into one of the state’s top districts.

Guymon enters Jelsma Stadium with a 0-3 record while top-ranked and defending state champion Guthrie stands at 3-0.

The Tigers are allowing an average 69 points per game and have scored just twice this season.

Guymon has been in a rebuilding phase and the jump to Class 5A has not done them any favors.

After being shut-out by a good Kingfisher team in week one (70-0), Guymon has scored in each of their last two games, but the Tiger’s offense could see their tallest challenge on Guthrie’s Homecoming.

Guthrie’s defense is allowing an average of 215 yards per game, but a good chunk of that came in last week’s win over Enid.

Guymon will look to utilize senior running back Clay Brooks, sophomore quarterback Jacob Test and wide receiver Alex Zakrezewicz in their offense.

Meanwhile, Guthrie will look to win their third straight Homecoming game and 10th overall under Watkins, who is 9-2 in those games. The ball coach will sit out his final game of his 8-game suspension ranging back from last season.

The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM, or at www.GuthrieSportsPage.com.

That’s going to be a long drive back to Guymon….. We should see a lot of depth from the Blue Jays tonight. Heck, we could probably give some of the Jr. High kids a few reps!
