Tim Flanigan named GHS boys head basketball coach

The announcement that Pete Papahronis accepted the Guthrie girls basketball job after stepping down as the GHS boys coach came at a surprise.

Tim Flanigan was named the boy’s head coach at Guthrie High School.

His replacement comes at no surprise.

Tim Flanigan accepted the boys heading coach job after serving as an assistant coach for five seasons under Papahronis, including two state championships in 2008 and 2009.

The school board will need to officially accept the position at the next board meeting.

Flanigan, originally from Ft. Collins, Colorado, attended Chadron State College in  Nebraska on a basketball scholarship and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Flanigan teaches AP Calculus at Guthrie High School.

“Thanks to all of you who supported me through the process,” Flanigan said after accepting his new position.

Papahronis, who was the 2012 Suburban Conference Coach of the Year, just finished his 9th season as the boy’s head coach with a 17-11 record and a trip to the state tournament.

Papahronis took five of his nine teams, at Guthrie, to the big dance where he had a 7-3 state tournament record and two 5A state titles in 2008 and 2009.

Papahronis took over the boy’s position in 2004 as his first head coaching position after serving as an assistant coach for former head coach Charles Crooks.
