Longhorns cross six runs in the first en route to win

The Oklahoma wind made its presence known early as did the Jones Longhorns Tuesday afternoon at Squires Field.

The Longhorns collected four straight hits and took advantage of a couple of Guthrie miscues in the field. Before the BlueJays could even pick up their bats they trailed 6-0 and eventually dropped their first game of the season with a 10-5 loss.

The Jays saw a talented pitcher in Jones’ Blake Estep, who pitched six innings and collected eight strike outs to three walks.

Guthrie (1-1) responded with two runs of their own when senior first baseman Hayden Seifert connected for a 2-run home run to cut the deficit to four. The round tripper was Seifert’s first of the season and finished the game with two hits.

Jones (1-0) collected another run in the second and fourth innings to go back up six runs, 8-2.However, Guthrie put up a three spot in the fourth to pull within three, 8-5.

Seifert begun the fourth with a single and was sent home when senior catcher Landry Chappell belted his first home run of the season for the 2-run shot to cut the deficit in half, 8-4. Chappell missed the season opener against Bethel.

In a pinch-hitting role, senior Luke Davis singled and later moved up to second on a pass ball and to third on a called balk. Davis eventually scored on a single by sophomore Donovan Jordan.

Jones, who a season ago was 26-4 and made the Class 3A state semifinals, collected two more runs in the seventh to conclude the scoring.

Reed Roberts was handed the loss on the mound. Roberts pitched four innings allowing 9 hits and four earned runs.

Casey Gates came in relief and pitched the last three innings and allowed seven hits and two earned runs.

Up next for the Jays will be another home game when Cashion (4:00) comes to town on Thursday with weather permitting. The following day, Guthrie travels for the first time and will take on Norman High (4:30).

Apparently the Jays weren’t using the pre-game warmups to warm up! Doesn’t take long for a baseball game to out of hand.

Is everyone healthy right now? Haven’t heard Dutton’s name in either write up and you mentioned Davis coming in in a pinch hitting role and not until the 4th inning? Is someone starting over him now?
