Chappell, Dutton take down the Cushing Tournament

Landry Chappell and Bryan Dutton have been the one-two punch for Guthrie football, wrestling and baseball for the last three seasons. This past weekend, the punches kept on coming.

The BlueJay duo each won their weight class in the competitive Cushing Tournament to helped pace Guthrie to a sixth place finish overall.

“The wrestling at the tournament was tough from the very start,” second year assistant coach Justin Stevens said. “I was really proud of the guys fighting through tough matches and winning close matches late.”

Chappell collected two falls and a major decision en route to his 220 pound championship. Dutton was a perfect 5-0 with three major decisions. It was the first tournament of the year for Chappell while Dutton stayed perfect in his second tournament this season.

At 152 pounds, Guthrie’s Devin Bilyeu made the semifinals with three wins before losing in the semi’s, but finished strong in his final match to capture third place.

Sophomore Conner Howard finished the weekend with a 4-2 record, including two falls, for a fifth place finish.

Alex Nelson (106 pounds) continues to make his presence known with a fourth place finish. The freshmen collected a fall in one of his five wins.

145lbs Bryan Dutton won 1st, went 5-0, with 3 majors
152lbs Devin Bilyeu, placed 3rd, went 4-1, with 1 fall
160lbs Travis Hudson, DNP, went 0-2, bumped up a weight class
170lbs Andrew Toney, DNP, went 1-2
195lbs Conner Howard, Placed 5th, went 4-2, with 2 Falls
220lbs Landry Chappell, won 1st, with 2 falls, 1 major
285lbs Blake Finley, DNP, went 1-2, with 1 Fall
