The Guthrie BlueJay wrestling squad was a touch handicapped when they took part in their first tournament of the season in Oklahoma City this weekend.

Guthrie coaches Justin Stevens and Jack O'Connor look on during a tournament last season.

Despite not filling out a full squad, the Jays managed an eight-place finish in a 6A heavy Putnam City Tournament.

Class 5A’s third ranked tournament team was without the services of a few wrestlers who are still making the transition from football to wrestling. Among those were Bryan Dutton, Landry Chappell, Andrew Toney and Conner Howard. John Davison also did not participate due to an injury.

Despite the short staff, the Jays managed 187 teams points and was the second highest 5A school. Putnam City won their own tournament with 387 points.

Guthrie’s Alex Nelson, Timothy O’Connor and Devin Bilyeu made the tournament championship match, but came up short in the final match. Nelson (106) finished 4-1 overall with three falls, O’Connor (126) was 5-1 with two falls and a major decision, Bilyeu finished the tourney with a 6-1 record that included one fall,  two tech falls and a major decision.

Jared Ball went 4-2 in his six matches with one fall and a major decision en route to a sixth place finish in the 145 pound division.
Justin Ball competed in seven matches and came away with five wins in the 132 pound division. Ball piled up one fall.
Travis Hudson, who bumped up two weight divisions, finished 2-3 with his wins coming via a fall and major decision.
At 138, Tyler Mahan was 3-3 in his matches and at 120 pounds Forest Stegner finished 1-3 in his matches.
Guthrie will begin their home schedule (high school and Junior High) Thursday, December 15 when they host Perkins. Mat time is set for 6:00.
