Guthrie freshmen hold off Noble to stay unbeaten

Bookmark and Share

The offense was creative and the defense was stingy for the Guthrie freshmen football team Monday evening.

The freshmen held on to a 14-0 halftime lead to Noble to hold off the Bears 14-7. With the win, Guthrie improves to 6-0 on the season. Meanwhile, the Guthrie junior varsity team had their third game of the season canceled due to Noble not having enough players. Many of the players, however, saw valuable playing time Friday night in the varsity game.

The BlueJays jumped out to a 7-0 lead when quarterback Tanner Meredith lobbed a pass to Elliot Curry, who went up and got the ball and dashed in for the score.

The Jays responded quickly with their final score with 1:13 left in the opening quarter when Meredith found Chase Neumann, who much like Curry, ran past his defender for the score.

Guthrie had two first half scores called back on penalties, including one just before the half. The play to setup the called back score was a doozy with Meredith throwing a later pass to Trey Wilson, who lined up behind two other BlueJay receivers, but instead of running he launched a pass inside the 10-yard line and found Curry.

Noble put together a nice drive and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to slash the lead in half with 2:59 left in the third quarter.

The Guthrie defense made numerous stops and forced Noble to throw the ball and where not successful in the process.

Next up for the freshmen will be a trip to Carl Albert on Monday evening.
