Landry Chappell and Bryan Dutton have had some special moments in the athletic field and perhaps none bigger came when they both captured state championships in wrestling this past February. Well now, they have their own day in Guthrie.

Chappell won the 215 pound championship while Dutton secured the 140 pound title as they became the first Guthrie wrestlers to win a state championship since 1992.

For their accomplishments, Guthrie Mayor Chuck Burtcher announced September 6th as Landry Chappell Day and September 7th as Bryan Dutton Day in the City of Guthrie.

The Guthrie duo became the 10th and 11th wrestler in Guthrie history to be called a state champion.

Both student-athletes are not only are stand-outs on the mat, but on the football field and baseball diamond as well.

On the gridiron, Dutton, a junior, has set passing records for a season and a career for Guthrie while Chappell has been among the top tacklers in the state and is the all time leading tackler in Guthrie history.

On the diamond, both were named to the first team of  The Oklahoman’s Big All-City team and Dutton was named as a reserve to the All-State team and Chappell as an honorable mention. In addition, Dutton was named to the Sophomore Sunbelt’s All Tournament team this past summer and Chappell was among the leaders in last years Junior Sunbelt.

Perhaps possibly more impressive is both hold high-grade point averages that any college, or university would accept.
