4th inning dooms softball against Piedmont

Take away one half inning Monday evening and the Guthrie Lady Jays softball program may very well have a winning record. However, all seven innings count.

Guthrie held a 5-1 advantage going into the  fourth inning when Piedmont took advantage of Lady Jays miscues in the field. Before it was over the Lady Wildcats had plated seven runs and would go on to collect a 11-6 win.

Piedmont drew first blood in the first inning with a run, but Guthrie countered that with a run of their own in their first at bat when freshmen Bailey Shaffer crossed the plate.

The big inning for Guthrie came in the third inning with four runs to take a 5-1 advantage, but then came the fourth inning nightmare. Piedmont added three insurance runs in the sixth inning.

Trailing 11-5 going into their final at bat, Guthrie managed one run when McKale Hopfer, who singled up the middle, collided with the Piedmont catcher and reached the plate to score. Hopfer and Shaffer each scored twice.

Cushing Tournament

Head coach Lee Linsenmeyer collected his first win as the Guthrie coach when his troops took down Tonkawa 7-5 in the second game of the rain stricken tournament.

The Lady Jays dropped their first game against Blackwell (7-1) and third game against Cushing (7-0).

The final two games of the tourney were wins for the Jays with a 11-1 decisive win over Agra and a 3-2 win over Frederick. Hopfer collected four strike outs and no earned runs against Agra while Shaffer piled up six K’s and allowed just one earned run.

Up next for Guthrie will be a road trip to Harrah for a non-district game on Tuesday before heading off to the Perry Tournament at the end of the week.
