Guthrie and Oklahoma State football fans were hoping September 2009 would have been the day, but it will be September 2011 for Kye Staley.

Staley has had an up and down roller coaster ride since departing Guthrie with a significant knee injury in a pre-season practice while at Ostate, but Staley’s determination to get back on the field appears will pay off.

Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy said Staley will carry the ball when the Pokes open the season with  Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 3.

The Guthrie product, who led the Jays to the 2007 state championship, was a prized recruit for the Cowboys whom he chosen over Arkansas. Staley was among the top 150 in the nation according to ESPN.

“For me, it’ll be a big thing,” Staley told The Oklahoman. “I haven’t played yet. And it’ll be an emotional time for my mom and my friends, because they’ve wanted to see me play. They haven’t seen me play since the Guthrie days.”
