Battle of the sexes goes to the males

It was the boys who won the final score, but it was a win-win for Guthrie Softball and GHS athletics.

Guthrie Softball head coach Lee Linsenmeyer constructed a battle of the sexes match up featuring the Lady Jays and the GHS baseball team. The two met Friday evening at the softball field for a softball fundraiser that saw a great turn out from fans and parents. The crowd saw the boys come away with a 10-2 win.

“We wanted the girls to have fun, but the main thing we wanted to come out of here with no injuries,” Linsenmeyer said, but quickly switched the focus for the team. “Now it’s time to get to business on Monday and get ready for the season opener on Tuesday.”

Junior Bryan Dutton started the night off by drilling a two-strike pitch over the left field wall. The All-City selection, who bats and throws right, did so from the left handers batter box with a wooden bat. He finished the night with three RBIs.

Hayden Seifert added a solo home run of his own.

The Lady Jays definitely had the edge in the circle with freshmen Bailey Shaffer and junior McHale Hopfer as the BlueJays threw out several players who had a much harder time throwing strikes. However, senior Luke Davis came in and found the grove the boys were looking for.

BlueJays head coach Jon Chappell had a few rules for his club, but the most obvious rule was if you walked a batter you were leaving the circle. “We don’t allow walks in softball,” Chappell said who was a former GHS softball coach in the 1990’s.

The Lady Jays will have a day of practice on Monday before they host Harrah to begin the season on Tuesday with the junior varsity starting at 5:00 and the varsity following at 6:30.
