GHS athletics facilities are taking shape after storm

Guthrie High School athletic facilities are beginning to take the next steps from recovering from the May 24th Guthrie tornado.

Workers begin work on the footing on Tuesday morning.

The EF-5 twister took out the football’s weight room when the high winds took the outer shell off its foundation. Just seconds later the storm threw the softball bleachers into the back stop, crumpled the scoreboard and twisted the metal outfield fence.

The weight room project started just the week with the pouring of the footing for the 60 x 50 weight room that will include a locker room for the boys soccer and track teams. The building will be built just east of the current football locker room (Building of Champions) at the high school practice field.

Head football coach Rafe Watkins was told the outer shell should be completed by the time school starts (August 19th)and hopes to have all the weights moved in at that  time. In the meantime, the Jays have been lifting inside the high school as part as their summer program called M.T.X.E. (Mental Toughness Xtra Effort).

For the softball program, the outfield and surrounding fence was taken down earlier this week as they prepare for the upcoming season that starts in early August.

Lee Linsenmeyer is preparing for his first season as the Lady Jays head coach and at the same is preparing the field so the team can begin practice later this month.

Along with the new fence, the program will be adding a new back stop with a stone wall and netting and will move the current twisted down scoreboard from left field to right field. On Tuesday, the back edge of the infield was cut back and sod was added.
