Tennis teams goes back to coaches stomping grounds

The Lady Jays and BlueJays made a trip to Bartlesville on Monday and came back with two second place medals in doubles action.

In No.1 girls doubles action, Brooke Powell and Taylar Swartzbaugh dropped a three set decision to the home team in the finals. In their first match they beat McAlester in three sets 1-6, 7-6, 8-6 and in their next match they defeated the No. 2 seeded Ponca City 6-2, 7-6.

“This was their first tournament to make it to the finals, so I was very proud of them,” head coach Mary Hudson said, who grew up playing basketball and tennis in Bartlesville and in her senior year was named to the All-State tennis team.

In singles action, Heidi Kuruvilla lost her first match to the top seed from Owasso 6-0, 6-0 before losing her second match in a close three set match to Ponca City. Despite winning her third match, she had to default due to an injury.

In No. 2 singles, Cheyenne Royal went the max in all three of her matches, but was unable to pull out a win. She dropped her first match to Muskogee, her second match to Sand Springs, and in her final match she lost to Ponca City.

For the BlueJays it was the doubles team of Andy Hartley and Josh Wehrenberg that placed second. In their first round they defeated Sand Springs 6-0, 6-0, in the second round they beat Ponca City 6-4, 6-3 and in their final round they lost to Bartlesville 6-4, 6-2.

In No. 2 doubles action, Barrett Porter and Seth Vicchio placed fourth by winning one of three matches. In their first round they beat Bixby 6-1, 6-2. In their next round they lost to Muskogee in three sets 6-0, 1-6, 6-10 and in the match for third they lost a close match to McAlester 7-6, 6-4.

Dylan Walker played Bartlesville in the first round and lost 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles. In the second round he lost to Bixby 6-0, 7-5 and in his final match he lost to Owasso 6-1, 6-0.

Dalton Jones, who was playing in No. 2 singles, played Muskogee in the first round and lost 6-0, 6-0. In the second round he lost to Sand Springs in three sets and in his last round he defeated Bixby in three sets.

The Lady Jays will host the Girls Companion Heath Tennis Tournament and the BlueJays will host the Boys Eskridge Chevrolet Tennis Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Friday.
