The Guthrie baseball program won their 14th game of the year with a home split with North division foe Piedmont. The BlueJays are now 6-3 in conference play and have jumped up to No. 6 in the latest Class 5A coaches poll.

In game one of the double-header, the Jays needed an extra inning to preserve a 4-3 win as Bryan Dutton collected his third win of the year by pitching the distance. Game two witness Piedmont taking a 6-2 decision. Monday’s game was cancelled resulting in the twinbill.

Junior Luke Davis, who started the inning with a single, scored the winning run when Donovan Jordan was caught in run down between second and third base. Davis saw his opportunity to score and slid in for the walk off win.

Guthrie jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Chappell crushed his third homer of the season to score Seifert, who reached with a single. Seifert led the team with two hits in the game.

The BlueJays were back on the score board when the smallest player on the squad, Scott Pickle, delivered his first varsity home run to give his team a 3-0 lead through five. However, Piedmont two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to send it into the extra frame.

Wildcats take game two 6-2

Piedmont served as the home team in-game two and struck early and often en route to splitting with the Jays.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a home run in the first inning and the scored remained the same until the Jays used the long ball to take the lead.

Landry Chappell and John Clark both connected for their fourth home run of the year in the top of the fourth inning and at the same time giving the Jays a 2-1 advantage. However, Piedmont responded with three runs in a very unusual way.

Piedmont picked up a single and double to put runners on base when the next Wildcat delivered a shot toward the outfield wall. Davis was able to track the ball down, but the ball popped out of his glove and over the fence for a 3-run homer and Piedmont took the lead back 4-2.

In the sixth inning, the Wildcats add two more insurance runs with a 2-run homer.

Guthrie hits the diamond again on Thursday, but on the road at U.S. Grant before coming home Saturday to host McGuinness.
