Baseball takes two of three at home

It was a busy two-day stretch for the Guthrie Baseball team with three games at Squires Field with mother nature flexing her muscles.

On Friday, the Jays entertained the third ranked Deer Creek Antlers on a great evening for baseball. However, the Antlers ended Guthrie’s 8-game win streak with a 7-4 win. Deer Creek, with Saturday’s win over Woodward, is 10-0 against Oklahoma competition and 10-4 overall.

All seven runs for the Antlers came across on home runs, including the game changing grand slam in the third inning. Sophomore Bryan Dutton suffered his first loss of the season on the mound despite keeping Deer Creek under control for the majority of the game.

Coming to bat in the second inning and trailing 1-0, Guthrie took a 2-1 lead with both runs coming after two outs to start the inning thanks to control issues from the mound.

Luke Davis started things off with a single and both Cody Reihs and Hunter Gates drew walks to load the bases for Jacob Chappell, who also ended up walking to bring in Davis. Dutton followed that by being hit by a pitch as well to bring in Reihs and the lead.

Deer Creek’s Isaac Hellbusch quickly gave his team the lead back for good with the grand slam, but the Jays rallied to get one of those back in the home half when Hayden Seiftert singled and later scored on John Clark’s RBI single to cut the lead down 5-3.

The Antlers followed that two more runs in the fourth to go up 7-3 on a 2-run homer. The score remained the same until the fifth thanks again to Seifert, who singled with one out and came around to the plate on a fielding error to conclude the scoring.

Guthrie managed four runs on four hits against hard throwing Brian Anderson, who has signed to play college baseball at Arkansas. The Jays fall to 4-2 in conference play.

The Jays got back in the win column with a 5-4 win over Class 3A’s sixth ranked Chandler Lions despite leaving a season high 12 runners on base.

The game saw a pitching dual in the first three innings between the Lions Brady Holcomb and Guthrie’s Reed Roberts. Roberts recorded 20 of the 21 outs for his fourth win of the season to move to 4-1. The freshmen right hander did not allow a walk and was able to scatter seven hits through his six and two-thirds of work.

Kasey Gates recorded the final out of the game to pick up the first save of the season for the Jays.

Guthrie struck first in the fourth inning by collecting singles each from Dusty Cotton, Jacob Chappell, and Scott Pickle. Both Chappell and Pickle picked up a RBI to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.

Chandler were their own enemy in the fifth when the Jays were able to scratch a run across and take a 3-0 lead. Landry Chappell first drew a walk, Davis reached on by an error, Donovan Jordan then drew a walk to load the bases, and then Jacob Chappell walked to bring h0me cousin Landry for his second RBI of the game.

The Lions finally got things going in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead by taking advantage of four hits, but the lead did not last long as the Jays rallied in the home half of the inning and once again it was benefited with Chandler miscues.

Pickle led off by being hit-by-pitch, Landry Chappell and Davis each drew base-on-balls to load the bases. With 2-outs, Gates reached on base with an error that plated both Chappell and Davis.

Guthrie and Kingfisher played the third game of the afternoon in 42 degree weather after seeing temperatures the day before in the 70’s.

In the end, Guthrie collected their 10th win of the season to improve to 10-3 on the year with a 6-1 win over the Yellowjackets. Junior hurler Hayden Seifert remained perfect on the hill to improve to 2-0 by throwing a complete game scattering five hits, walking three, and striking out two.

Seifert along with battery mate Landry Chappell led the team with two hits each. Dutton, Davis, Kasey Gates, Landry Chappell, and Jacob Chappell each collected an RBI.

The BlueJays will have another busy week with two conference games and a four-day tournament at Choctaw beginning on Wednesday. The week will begin when the Jays travel to second ranked Chickasha (12-2) and return back for their only home game with Noble on Tuesday.
