Although the (approximately 18) Bluejay Pride wrestlers this season were all considered Novice (beginner) wrestlers, they had an extremely promising and well-accomplished season this year.

Every wrestler on the team won a majority of their wrestling matches, every wrestler began a collection of hardware to display, and a few built quite a large hardware collection.

The team attended regular season tournaments on 11 weekends this winter, beginning in November. The most notable success stories of the regular season were Noah Cairns, earning an award every weekend of competition, and Allyn Orndorff, earning 10 awards throughout.

“This was an exciting season for our (basically) new wrestlers,” stated Coach David Cairns, “For Noah Cairns to have placed in every tournament during his second year of competition, and for Allyn Orndorff to have placed as many times as he did in his first year of competition, especially in open tournaments as well as novice.”

At the end of the season 5 of the Bluejay Pride Wrestlers attended the Central Regional in an attempt to qualify for the OKWA State Championships. Those attending were Elijah Wallace (Div. 1, 40 lbs.), Eli Kirk (Div. 1, 43 lbs.), Allyn Orndorff (Div. 1, 46 lbs.), Noah Cairns (Div. 1, 66 lbs.), and Khane Smith (Div. 2, 55 lbs.). Of the wrestlers attending the regional, Elijah Wallace, Allyn Orndorff, and Noah Cairns Qualified for the State Tournament.

The State Tournament ended with only one placer for Bluejay Pride, Noah Cairns, who place third in the tournament, although he had previously earned the championship medal at the YMCA State Championships.

“I am very happy and optimistic about this group of extremely talented young athletes,” commented Coach Brian Orndorff, “Noah Cairns had an incredible season, Allyn Orndorff placing as many times as he did when his brackets ranged in size from 32 to 56 entries, and this group of four, five and six-year olds who earned an incredible number of awards in their first season.”

The team is immediately beginning Greco-Roman and Freestyle practices each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 pm at the Bluejay Pride Gym, 223 S. Cedar in Guthrie. The team is recognized across the state and nation for their overwhelming success in the Olympic styles of wrestling, and expects to fare well this year in the younger age divisions.

For information about the summer wrestling program, or to join, phone Brian Orndorff at 405-503-1626, or stop by the gym any weekday evening between 6:00 and 7:30.
