Guthrie alum named head baseball coach at Star

Guthrie alum Terry Bennett Jr. knew the day was coming, it was just a matter of when. That day came Wednesday afternoon when he was named the head baseball coach at Star Spencer.

Bennett, a 1996 Guthrie graduate, is a school teacher at Roger Middle School in the Oklahoma City Public School Systems, where he has  coached numerous sports and kids on the junior high level, but has waited for the day to land a high school head coaching job. Rogers feeds into Star Spencer High School, where Bennett will continue to teach.

“Gotta a lot of work ahead of me to make baseball apart of their culture, but we gonna get it done,” Bennett said after being named to his new post.

Bennett was named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All State team after a stellar senior campaign season for the Jays in ’96. Bennett was a three-year letterman for both Guthrie Baseball and Basketball and moved on to play college baseball at high power Connors Junior College, in Warner, and at Central Oklahoma before graduating at Langston University.

Bennett’s dad, Terry Bennett, was a long time teacher and coach in the Guthrie system before just recently retiring. The younger Benner is the son of Terry and Thecil Bennett and has a one year old son, Terry Bennett III.
