Home stand begins with win for Guthrie

Despite losing one of their key senior leaders to a season ending injury, the Guthrie Lady Jays basketball team are refusing to feel sorry for themselves.

Guthrie returned back to the home floor for the first time since Allyson Chadd went down with a season ending knee injury and in the process handed Piedmont their third straight loss with a 28-25 win. Guthrie is now 10-9 while Piedmont drops to 14-6. Guthrie redeems their earlier loss this season to the Wildcats.

In a game where offense was hard to come by, Guthrie took their first and second leads early in the third quarter and never once trailed again. Both teams struggled in the first half offensively and was tied at the half at 10-all.

Mikaela Murillo’s field goal with 6:59 in the third gave the Lady Jays a 13-12 lead. A lead they never would relinquish. Guthrie increased their lead as high as seven points, but only to see Piedmont come back.

The Lady Wildcats final bucket came with 1:18 left in the game to pull within 1-point, 26-25. Neither team managed another field goal, but two Melinda Murillo free throws with 33 seconds finished out the scoring.

Guthrie has split their last four games with four quality ranked teams in Carl Albert, Deer Creek, Harrah, and Piedmont.

Guthrie will look for their second win in a row when they host Chickasha Friday night for Senior Night before wrapping up the season Saturday evening with a home game with El Reno. The Lady Jays defeated both teams earlier this season by double digits, including a blow-out over the Lady Chicks, 45-16, on the final day of the Chickasha Tournament back on January 8th.

Guthrie Scoring: Ashley Shields 9, Melinda Murillo 7, Jill Davis 6, Mikaela Murillo 5, Gracynn Smith 1

Note: There will not be any junior varsity games Friday and the girls JV team will not play on Saturday as well.
