Split decision for Lady Jays in Miami

When they finally threw the ball in the air, the Guthrie Lady Jays had a split decision against two Tulsa Public School teams in the 66th Annual NEO High School Tournament.

The Lady Jays, who were scheduled to play three games, had their game with Grove canceled due to winter conditions. Grove did not participate in the round robin tourney due to being out of school on Thursday and Friday.

The round robin begins a new season for the Lady Jays without senior forward Allyson Chadd. Chadd learned before departing for Miami that she torn her ACL and MCL in her knee. Chadd injured the knee just 23 seconds into Guthrie’s Homecoming game on January 14th. She had averaged a near double-double with nine points and eight rebounds a game.

Guthrie began play with the 5th ranked Lady Chargers of Tulsa Memorial on the home floor of the NEO Norseman. The Chargers jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead before both teams managed eight points in the second quarter.

Memorial took a 21-15 halftime lead. Both teams scored 24 points in the second half.

Ashley Shields and Melinda Murillo finished with double-digit scoring for the Lady Jays with 15 and 12 respectively.

Day Two: Back on the winning track

Guthrie ended a 11-day drought of not winning a game, but that three-game losing streak came to a crashing end with a 42-24 blow-out over Tulsa McLain.

The Lady Jays are now 8-6 on the season and are back in conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Western Heights.

Sophomore guard Melinda Murillo highlighted the score book with a game high 16 points to score 28 points combined in the two game stand in Tulsa. Older sister Mikaela Murillo was next in line with eight points in the win.
