Chappell tackles second team All State honor

Bookmark and Share

Guthrie football coach Rafe Watkins simply puts it. Landry Chappell is the toughest player we have. That toughness equals a second team All State recognition from The Oklahoman.

For the second straight season, the junior linebacker led 5A in tackles with 178 this season and 170 in 2008. Chappell has piled up 423 tackles and 15 sacks in his three-year career.

Chappell along with Kentrell Brothers were named to the All City Defensive team and selected to the Oklahoman Big All City roster. Chappell is among one of the early favorites in 2011 to land first team all state honors.

Opposing full backs don’t like the idea of a lead play, running backs think twice about going over the guard, and receivers don’t get to excited about a slant across the middle. Why? They know there is a Chappell lurking somewhere.

The three-sport athlete has been the center piece for defensive coordinator Kelly Beeby’s stingy defense. The Jays have been one of the elite defense’s in the state and Chappell has a lot to do with that.

The defensive line deserves a lot of credit for the success of Chappell, but its a strategy that works for the defensive line as well knowing Chappell will be where ever the football is and clean the play up.
