Antlers run past Jays for conference

It was expected to come down to a two-team race and it did, Tuesday afternoon, at the Suburban Conference Cross Country meet.

Deer Creek's Taler Buck and Guthrie's Jonathan Ogan at the Guthrie meet earlier this year.

The host school took advantage of their home course by narrowly escaping the Guthrie boys team by six points despite the Jays have four runners finish in the top seven.

Deer Creek’s Taler Buck held form by winning the race in a time of 16:24, but was closely followed by Guthrie’s Zack Cates, who finished seven seconds behind the favorite.

Jonathan Ogan was the next to cross the line at 16:32 and 10 seconds later was Hunter Sallee. Walker Cross finished the race with a seventh place finish with a time of 17:02.

The difference in the race, between the Jays and Antlers, came down to the fifth man and that is where the Antlers KJ Nigg finished 10th to seal the conference title. Deer Creek finished with 30 team points, Guthrie 36, and Shawnee was a distant third with 95 points.

Next up for Clay Tarter’s Jays is the annual Chile Pepper Invitational, Saturday, and is hosted by the University of Arkansas. The following Saturday, Guthrie will run in regionals, and the following week will be the State run at Mitch Park, in Edmond.
