It was not the way the Guthrie boys golf team wanted to go out in the Class 5A state tournament, but the Jays finished a solid season at Ardmore’s Dornick Hills golf course.
The BlueJays finished 11th overall as the host team Ardmore took the team title by 65 shots over runner-up Chickasha.
Taylor Williams, of Chickasha, took the individual top honor by 12 shots to win his second consecutive 5A tournament. McAlester’s Casey Fernandez for the second straight season finished runner-up.
Leading the way for the Jays was senior Jack Klein and his three round scores of 88, 73, and 84. Fellow senior Bryce Sullivan shot 86, 92, and 88. Brent Jenkins improved each round out and finished with scores of 89, 88, and 86. Ethan Delno finished with 92, 85, and 93 while freshmen Brayden Berryman finished with rounds of 94, 96, and 90.

After day one of the Class 5A boys golf state championship it appears the team trophy will be staying in Ardmore. Meanwhile, the Guthrie BlueJays struggled on day one at Ardmore’s Dornick Hills golf course.
The BlueJays best round all day came from senior Jack Klein, who scored an 73 in the second stretch of 18 holes in the 54 hole contest that concludes Tuesday afternoon. Klein finished the first day as the top scorer for the Jays with a 163 on the par 70 course, but 21 shots off leader and defending state champion Taylor Williams, of Chickasha.
Guthrie’s Brent Jenkins scored an 89 and 88, Ethan Delno 92 and 85, Bryce Sullivan 86 and 92, and Brayden Berryman 94 and 96 for the team score of 695.
As a team, the Jays are 10th in the 12 team field, but will take aim at a top six finish.
Ardmore, who is on their way of winning the fourth straight championship and six in the last seven seasons, registered a team score of 621 and owns a 40 shot lead over Durant.
