Deer Creek blows by field; North over takes Memorial

The annual TIG Guthrie Cottonwood Flats Invitational has some of the elite teams and runners in high school cross country each season in late August. 2011 proved to be no different.

The two-time defending 5A champs from Guthrie were looking for their first win in several seasons in their own meet, but Deer Creek simply did not allow that happen in the boys 5A and Below race.

The Antlers, who appear to be the team to beat in 5A, finished three in the top five with the Antler’s Blaine Powell came across the line in 15:31 in the 5k race before his teammate and two-time state champion Taler Buck. Buck, who ran a 15:49 last year in the flats, ran a 15:45.

Guthrie had the next two runners cross the line with Walker Cross and Jonathan Ogan. Cross, who finished 11th in the state-run last October, ran a 15:50 while Ogan came in just behind him at 15:51. Ogan improved his time by 23 seconds a season ago in the run when he finished second overall.

The BlueJays Hunter Sallee (17:43) finished 20th overall, Taylor Self (17:51) was 23rd and Evan Watts (18:35) was the fifth high score for the Jays finished 31st.

Rischard finished the two-mile run in 11:57 and Choate at 11:58. Last season, Choate ran a 12:00 with the next runner not coming in until 39 seconds later.

The Huskies out ran the Irish and their Edmond cross town counter parts in Edmond Memorial. However, it was an Irish runner who distance himself from the field.

Larry Ressler ran a 15:39 to win the race with the next runner, Edmond North’s Austin Mayer, not crossing until 42 seconds later. McGuinness’s Hunter Swink was third with a time of 16:55.
