Kentrell Brothers to have season ending surgery

It is a story Guthrie football fans are too familiar with. A highly talented recruit from GHS suffering an injury that ends a year of college football.

Brothers will have surgery on Friday and will red shirt his freshmen year.

First it was Kye Staley and now it’s Kentrell Brothers.

Brothers, a 2011 Guthrie alum and middle linebacker at Missouri, tore ligaments in his ankle and broke his fibula during a scrimmage Thursday. Brothers is expected to miss three to five months after he has surgery on Friday.

Brothers, who was the Defensive Player of the Year in the state last season, told The Oklahoman the injury came on an option play.

“The quarterback pitched the ball, and I hit the running back and made the tackle,” Brothers said. “As soon as I hit the ground, I felt something in my ankle.”

Staley, a 2008 GHS alum, suffered a major knee injury at Oklahoma State after his red shirt year. The Ostate medical staff said it was one of the most significant knee injuries that they had ever seen. It was doubtful Staley would ever play again, but the BlueJay is expected to carry the ball in-game one this season.

“The first thing that came to my mind was Kye Staley,” Brothers said. “He popped into my head. I thought, ‘If he can do it, I can do it.’ His injury was far worse than mine.”

Brothers is the all-time leading receiver for catches and yards for a season and a career in Guthrie history. He was the first BlueJay to collect a 1,000 yards receiving. In addition, he was among the elite in sacks in both his junior and senior years in the state and has more sacks than any other player in Guthrie history.
