Despite a heat advisory and temperatures reaching near record highs, the 40th Howard Fife went on at the Guthrie Golf and Country Club on Saturday and Sunday.

This year the Fife had 20 teams with a total of 100 players battling the 103 degreeĀ heat and gusty, steady winds. The golfers also faced newly built bermuda greens that the club recently added.

The oldest golf course in Oklahoma (built inĀ 1900) witness the team of Shane Mackenzie, Jerry Johnson, Tate Spreacker, Von Martin and Cliff Burdick finish the tournament with a three under score to take first place. The team scored a three under on day one before shooting even par on Sunday.

First place prize included a $750 Callaway shopping spree card each, second place was $550 each, third place was $400 each, fourth $250, fifth $150, and 6th $100 each.

Day one of the Fife is scored by taking the team’s low best ball while Sunday is scored by taking the team’s two low balls on the 9-hole regulation length golf course.

Each team was paired up with handicaps verified by the GGCC and then were labeled by an A, B, C, D, and E player. Prior to the start of the tourney, golfers and their families gathered Friday evening for music, dancing, and socializing on the Club’s front lawn.
