Guthrie infielder Jacob Chappell has been thrown into action from the very beginning this season for the BlueJay baseball squad and the freshmen was thrown into a tight situation Monday evening.

Jacob Chappell collected his first varsity win along with adding a 2-RBI triple.

The Jays trailed Harrah 5-1 in the second inning when Chappell was called upon to relieve starting pitcher, Hunter Gates, and came in closed the door as the BlueJay offense rallied for 13 runs in the last four innings to run rule the Panthers in six innings with a 14-6 win at Squires Field.

Chappell collected his first varsity win on the mound by throwing four and two-thirds of an inning. He had four punch outs and allowed just one base-on-ball. In addition to his pitching duties, Chappell collected a 2-RBI triple.

The BlueJays jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the Panthers put a five-spot in the second inning to lead 5-1. The game was tied at 5-all when the Jays put a four spot in the third inning. The Jays had the lead for good when they added two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, and three in the sixth to walk off with the win.

Guthrie, who is currently ranked sixth in the coaches poll,  improves to 16-7 overall and 8-3 in conference play. The rankings are released each Tuesday morning.

Leading the offensive charge for the Jays was junior Luke Davis and freshmen Reed Roberts. Both finished by going 3-for-4 while Davis added an RBI and Roberts with two.

Guthrie will showdown with Shawnee, on Tuesday, in a top 10 match up that may have playoff positioning up for grabs. First pitch is set for 5:00 in Shawnee.

The Wolves will enter the game ranked No. 7 with a 13-7 record and winners six of their last seven. Just last week they won their own tournament with wins over Community Christian, Del City, Putnam City North, and Muskogee.

Voters in Guthrie approved the sale of the West Side Fire Station during last Tuesday’s election.

The proposal passed with a total of 179 votes to sell the station, while 45 voters did not want the city to sell the West Side Fire Station.

Officials say they will now determine the best way to sell the property by using either an auction or sealed bid.

The property cannot sell for less than the appraised value, which is a little over $51,000.

LMC Board of Trustees Vote to Align with Mercy

Logan Medical Center’s (LMC) Board of Trustees voted to enter into a non-binding letter of intent with Mercy Health System of Oklahoma (Mercy), a non-profit, Catholic sponsored healthcare system. This allows the two parties to work exclusively to explore the possibility of a strategic alliance.

In recent months, LMC’s administration, board of trustees, and medical staff have considered a number of options to strengthen and grow the organization, as hospitals around the United States assess how to position themselves in the new healthcare environment.

The letter of intent is developed around core principles that include:

1. Ensuring a long-term commitment to the continued operation of LMC
2. Ensuring a long-term commitment to Logan County, the hospital’s medical staff and employees
3. Providing access to sufficient capital to allow LMC to maintain high quality care for its patients
4. Investing in the capital necessary to pursue growth projects at LMC
5. Continuing the provision of quality health care services to Logan County, including continued and undiminished access for indigent and uninsured patients.

The board engaged Juniper Advisory, an investment banking firm based in Chicago that specializes in healthcare mergers and acquisitions, to conduct a controlled competitive bidding process that yielded proposals from several large hospital systems around the country. After months of thorough analysis the board elected to partner with Mercy. The parties will work together to conduct more detailed due diligence before consummating the relationship sometime this summer.

The goal of the letter of intent is to work toward forming a long lasting strategic alliance with Mercy. “The process has been fair and exhaustive, and I’m excited about the future of joining Mercy Health System. This relationship will ensure that the hospital continues to provide quality health care services in Logan County for years to come,” said Dennis Hunger, Logan Medical Center CEO.

Once the transaction is completed, Logan Medical Center would become the 29th hospital to join Mercy across the four-state region of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri.
