Guthrie Sports Page shared a few weeks ago about the attempted comeback by Guthrie’s Kye Staley with the Oklahoma State football program and it appears Staley is ahead of the game as the Cowboys go through spring drills.

Staley, who red-shirted in 2008, suffered one of the worse knee injuries that the Oklahoma State medical team had seen after tearing several knee ligaments during an OSU practice when he suffered a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus when a player rolled into his knee while carrying the ball early in the 2009 season.

Staley played multiple positions in leading Guthrie to the state championship in 2007. He ran for 1,380 yards and 28 touchdowns while passing for 625 yards, and caught 10 passes for 320 yards. Staley left the Guthrie program with multiple school records.

NewsOk’s OSU beat writer Brandon Chatmon caught up with the 2008 Guthrie graduate and talks about perhaps quitting a bit too early and his progress.

Kasey Gates will get his opportunities at the plate when teammate Hayden Seifert toes the mound and Gates took complete advantage in Choctaw on Thursday afternoon.

The BlueJays entered their game with the OKC Broncos needing a win to have a shot at the finals of the Choctaw Tournament and they got it with a 3-2 win despite being out hit 18-14.

Seifert pitched the full seven innings to stay perfect at 3-0 on the season. In his three appearances this season, the junior has allowed just four runs. In addition, Seifert was 2-for-4 with two singles in the tournament win on Thursday.

The Jays opened the game in the second inning when Gates delivered a 2-run home run that plated John Clark. The Broncos responded in the home half with a run of their own to cut the lead in half.

Both Seifert and Gates finished with a multi hit game. Gates finished 2-for-3 with the 2 RBIs.

Guthrie struck again in the fourth inning when Clark, who singled, scored on a wild pitch to give the Jays a 3-1 advantage. The Broncos scratched another run in the sixth, and threatened in their last at bat when Josh Blair delivered a 2-out double, but Guthrie retired the next batter to end the game.

The Jays improved to 13-4 overall and will play McGuinness for the final day of pool play. First pitch is set for noon.
