Ryan Kitch, Devin Bilyeu, Landry Chappell, and John Davison each made the final match of their weight class, but came up short.

Next on the schedule is the Conference Duals, in Shawnee, on Tuesday, but may be canceled due to the expected winter weather storm. Stay tuned to Guthrie Sports Page for any announcements.

Guthrie’s Devonte McCully’s break-out 2010 season on the gridiron for the BlueJay football squad will now benefit him in college football.

The 6’6 wide out has given his oral commitment to play football at East Central University in Ada.

Oral commitments are non-binding. McCully will make it official Wednesday morning inside Guthrie High School, at 9:00, on national signing day.

ECU, a NCAA Division II school, was 5-6 (4-1 in the Lone Star Conference) in the 2010 season. The Tigers are coached by Tim McCarty and the wide receivers coach is Dionte’ Dean.

McCully brought in 38 catches with 10 going for touchdowns to go with 720 yards. McCully forced opponents to give him as much attention as they were giving to fellow receiver and Missouri commit Kentrell Brothers. In the 2009 season, McCully had 12-catches, 140 yards, and three scores.

McCully became Guthrie’s 32nd All-State selection in school history by the Oklahoma Coaches Association. The game that features the West vs East is July 29, with a time and site to be determined. He has also invited to play for Oklahoma in the 74th Annual Oil Bowl Classic on June 11, 2011 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

When they finally threw the ball in the air, the Guthrie Lady Jays had a split decision against two Tulsa Public School teams in the 66th Annual NEO High School Tournament.

The Lady Jays, who were scheduled to play three games, had their game with Grove canceled due to winter conditions. Grove did not participate in the round robin tourney due to being out of school on Thursday and Friday.

The round robin begins a new season for the Lady Jays without senior forward Allyson Chadd. Chadd learned before departing for Miami that she torn her ACL and MCL in her knee. Chadd injured the knee just 23 seconds into Guthrie’s Homecoming game on January 14th. She had averaged a near double-double with nine points and eight rebounds a game.

Guthrie began play with the 5th ranked Lady Chargers of Tulsa Memorial on the home floor of the NEO Norseman. The Chargers jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead before both teams managed eight points in the second quarter.

Memorial took a 21-15 halftime lead. Both teams scored 24 points in the second half.

Ashley Shields and Melinda Murillo finished with double-digit scoring for the Lady Jays with 15 and 12 respectively.

Day Two: Back on the winning track

Guthrie ended a 11-day drought of not winning a game, but that three-game losing streak came to a crashing end with a 42-24 blow-out over Tulsa McLain.

The Lady Jays are now 8-6 on the season and are back in conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Western Heights.

Sophomore guard Melinda Murillo highlighted the score book with a game high 16 points to score 28 points combined in the two game stand in Tulsa. Older sister Mikaela Murillo was next in line with eight points in the win.

The Guthrie boys basketball team out rebounded Lawton MacArthur throughout their Friday afternoon game, but when it came down to needing one the Jays fell short.

After weather canceled day one of the Titan Classic, the games got started Friday and in the boys first game, MacArthur edged out the Jays 48-45. The Jays are now 0-3 this season on day one of tournaments.

Guthrie (7-6) will return Saturday with an 11:30 tip with Wichita North, who were defeated by Millwood 50-44. The Jays are without their head coach, Pete Papahronis, this weekend, who is with his family after the passing of his mother earlier this week.

Guthrie, who never once had a fourth quarter lead, pulled with three, 46-43, on Kentrell Brothers made lay-up and in the process was fouled with just 35 seconds remaining. Brothers missed the throw, but MacArthur turned the ball over out-of-bounds.

Eight seconds later, Richard Brothers hit a right-handed hook shot to bring the Jays within one, 46-45, with 27 seconds left. Guthrie quickly committed a foul to force the one-and-one.

The Highlanders missed the free throw, but liked they did 43 seconds earlier grabbed the rebound forcing Guthrie to once again foul. This time Mac hit both free throw to take a 3-point lead with 17 seconds remaining.

MacArthur, in a full court press, forced a Guthrie turnover, but then missed a lay-up with three seconds. Tim Zupo had a three-fourths of the floor shot, but fell well short.

Guthrie jumped out to a 12-5 lead to start the game, but Mac answered with a 10-0 run in the next 2:50 to give them their first lead. In the final 5:50 of the first half, Guthrie out scored Mac 8-4 to take a 20-19 lead into the locker room.

MacArthur’s junior play-maker, Quinton Paras, finished with a game high 16 points before fouling out. Paras had to sit the last 5:50 of the first half due to three fouls. Paras eventually fouled out with 1:42 left in the game.

Richard Brothers was the only BlueJay to score in double digits with 10.

 Guthrie 9 11 12 13 45

Winter weather forcing schedules to be rearranged

The Oklahoma weather that arrived early Thursday morning has proved to play hectic with Oklahoma high school sporting events, including for Guthrie.

GHS Wrestling

The BlueJays and Jets have canceled the Junior High and varsity dual and a make-up date has not been determined yet.

Lady Jays Basketball

The Lady Jays will participate in the 66 Annual NEO High School Tournament on Friday and Saturday with their schedule opponents and times. They will not make-up the Thursday game with fifth ranked Tulsa Memorial.

Guthrie will play Friday at 6:00, in the NEO gym, against the Lady Ridgerunners of Grove and then play on Saturday, at noon, against Tulsa McLain. Saturday’s game will be played at the Miami Activity Center.

BlueJay Basketball

Guthrie, who is participating in the Titan Classic in Midwest City, will be moved to Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Times will be the same as scheduled for the first two days.

It is unknown at the time how they will schedule the games on Monday.

Guthrie will play Lawton MacArthur at 11:30 Friday morning and with a win will play at 5:30 on Saturday, but a first round loss and the Jays would play at 11:30 on Saturday.

Luckily enough, the Jays have their open date on Friday and will only be in action in the back-to-back games next week on Monday and Tuesday.

9th Grade Basketball

The freshmen, who are participating in the Harrah Basketball tournament, will now play on Friday, Saturday, and next Saturday. All game times are kept the same as scheduled.

Gym space will be occupied throughout the week, in Harrah, causing the gap in tournament play.

Junior High Basketball

The Junior High basketball teams were scheduled to play four games with Shawnee today, but they have all been canceled. The games will not be made up.
