The Guthrie boys basketball team did not want to go 0-for-3 in the Ardmore Holiday Festival and thanks to a fourth quarter rally they didn’t.

The Jays used a 12-4 fourth quarter run to escape Southeast 45-40 in the seventh place game Thursday afternoon at the Ardmore middle school.

Sophomore guard JT McFadden scored a career high 15 points for the Jays, who will return back to action next with a home, conference game against Noble on Tuesday.

The Spartans held leads at the end of each of the first three-quarters. Guthrie improves to 3-2 overall after starting the tournament with back-to-back losses to 6A schools (Yukon and Midwest City).

Smith poured in 24 points and 11 rebounds to give her team a 61-36 win over tournament host Duncan to capture third place by winning two of three games. Guthrie improves to 3-2 overall on the season.

Senior forward Allyson Chadd also added a double double by scoring 11 points and bringing down 15 rebounds. Ahsley Shiels scored double figures with 12.

“We came out quick today,” assistant coach Jeff Ball said. “We played good defense which led to offense with easy buckets.” Guthrie outscored Duncan in each quarter.

Ball said the coaching staff was concerned with the slow starts and free throw shooting. Something that was not a factor on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Jays jumped out to a 24-12 first quarter lead and shot 78% (11-14) from the charity stripe.
