Sophomore guard JT McFadden scored a career high 15 points for the Jays, who will return back to action next with a home, conference game against Noble on Tuesday.

The Spartans held leads at the end of each of the first three-quarters. Guthrie improves to 3-2 overall after starting the tournament with back-to-back losses to 6A schools (Yukon and Midwest City).

Smith poured in 24 points and 11 rebounds to give her team a 61-36 win over tournament host Duncan to capture third place by winning two of three games. Guthrie improves to 3-2 overall on the season.

Senior forward Allyson Chadd also added a double double by scoring 11 points and bringing down 15 rebounds. Ahsley Shiels scored double figures with 12.

“We came out quick today,” assistant coach Jeff Ball said. “We played good defense which led to offense with easy buckets.” Guthrie outscored Duncan in each quarter.

Ball said the coaching staff was concerned with the slow starts and free throw shooting. Something that was not a factor on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Jays jumped out to a 24-12 first quarter lead and shot 78% (11-14) from the charity stripe.

The Guthrie boys basketball team was unable to add any points in the second quarter as the Midwest City Bombers kept a steady pace on day two of the Ardmore Holiday Festival.

6A’s fourth ranked Bombers, who were upset the previous day by Putnam City West, took out some of their frustration in a 63-41 win. The Jays fall to 2-2 overall on the season after starting the season off at 2-0.

Guthrie jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, but the Bombers finished the half with a 23-5 run to take a 25-11 half time advantage, including a 13-0 second quarter run.

Freshmen sensation Kai Callins paced the Jays with a game high 16 points.

Guthrie, who continues to play without senior leader Kentrell Brothers and Richard Brothers, got going in the second half with 30 points, but allowed 38 points to the Bombers.

The Jays offense has scored just 75 points in their two losses in Ardmore. Prior to that they had scored 123 points in their first two games of the season with a full squad.

Up next for Guthrie will be a 1:00 game Thursday afternoon against Southeast in the seventh place game.

The honors just keep on rolling in for Kentrell Brothers. The latest? The Oklahoman’s Big All City Defensive Player of the Year.

Brothers defensive junior teammate Landry Chappell was named to the All City Defensive team. Both were also selected to the Oklahoman Big All City roster.

Left tackle Blake Belcher was named to the second team offense and sophomore Bryan Dutton and senior wide receiver Devonte McCully were named to the honorable mention list.

Guthrie finished the season with an 11-2 record by advancing to the state semi-finals for the second consecutive year.

Brothers had 63 catches for school-record 1,304 yards and 18 TDs to help BlueJays reach 5A semifinals for second straight year. On defense, had 100 tackles. For the second straight season, Chappell led 5A in tackles with 178 this season and 170 in 2008. Chappell has piled up 423 tackles and 15 sacks in his three-year career.

Belcher, who many are tabbing as perhaps the top lineman in the state next season, commanded the left side of the line of scrimmage. Click here for the All City Offensive Team.

McCully was the second leading receiver behind Brothers and earned the recognition of being named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All State team. McCully hauled in 38 catches and 10 for touchdowns to go with 720 yards.

Dutton became Guthrie’s all-time passing leader in school history in Week 8 and finished the year with 2,408 passing yards (another school record) to go along with another school record of 54 career passing touchdowns with 29 this season.

For the second straight season, the Yukon Millers used a fourth quarter rally to slide past the Guthrie boys basketball team in the Ardmore Holiday Festival.

The Jays held a lead after each quarter except for the decisive fourth quarter as Yukon gives the Jays their first loss of the season 41-34. A season ago, Yukon hit a game winning 3-point shot off the backboard to down the Jays.

Guthrie (2-1) will move on and play 6A’s 4th ranked Midwest City, Wednesday at 1:40, after the Bombers were stunned by unranked Putnam City West 70-62 in the first game of the afternoon.

Guthrie, who is playing without Kentrell and Richard Brothers this week, started cold from the field, but kept their distance with an 8-3 first quarter and 13-10 halftime leads.

Both offense’s heated up for 32 points combined in the third quarter. However, the lack of points came back to haunt the Jays with the Millers outscoring them 14-6 in the final quarter.

Despite not playing to the level that their coaches were looking for, the Guthrie Lady Jays won their first round game in the Duncan Tournament.

Guthrie controlled the score board the entire game en route to a 40-28 win over Class 4A’s Idabel Lady Warriors. The Lady Jays improve to 2-1 overall and will play Norman North in the second round. Norman North, as expected, routed Madill, 89-31, in the first game of the tournament.

With the win, the Lady Jays won their first round tournament game since December 6th, 2007. That win also came in the Duncan Tourney with a 55-46 win over Skiatook.

Mikaela Murillo scored a game high nine points and helped her team jump out to a 9-3 first quarter lead and a 17-9 halftime advantage. However, the Lady Jays left points off the board by going 12-26 (46%) from the free throw line.

“We came out flat and did not play with energy,” assistant coach Jeff Ball said. “We will need to play a lot better and be more consistent if we want to win tomorrow.”

Norman North jumped up in the rankings to No. 10 in Class 6A and have already won the Altus Tournament this season. In their last meeting, Norman North defeated Guthrie, 55-35, in last season’s Norman North tournament.

Annual alumni game becomes a shoot-out

Guthrie boys head basketball coach Pete Papahronis stresses team defense all the time. Its a good thing he kept his distance from the annual Guthrie alumni basketball game Sunday evening.

The odd year BlueJay graduates jumped out to a 73-53 halftime lead and held on late in the fourth quarter to secure a 148-145 win in front of the well attended game. All proceeds go to the GHS basketball program.

The annual bragging rights of scoring the most points goes to Keaton Callins and Kressy Davis. Callins scored a game high 32 points, including 18 from beyond the arc, and Davis led the even years with 21. Darryl Knight chipped in with 20 points for the victors while BJ McDonald added 19 for the even years team.

The highlight of the night easily belong to Chaunsey Dumas. Justin Stevenson penetrated  into the paint and lost the ball from behind and went straight up where Dumas grabbed it, well above the rim, and flushed it for a gym erupting two-hand slam.

In total, 29 players played in the annual game that is played the day after Christmas.
