Softball now know where regionals will be played

The Guthrie Lady Jays Softball team will have a slight advantage when regional play starts in a few weeks, but the challenge has been set as Guthrie must make a two-plus hour trip to Southeastern Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association released the 2010 regional pairings and the 17th ranked Lady Jays have been shipped to the East and will have to travel to McAlester for the double elimination regional. Tulsa Edison rounds out the rare 3-team regional.

Tulsa Central was unable to comprise a team to compete so in turn McAlester receives a first round bye and Guthrie and Edison play for the right to play McAlester in the next round. All other regionals have the common four team format.

Guthrie is currently 12-19 on the season and just ahead of the Lady Jays in the rankings at No. 16 is Edison with a 17-6 record. Guthrie plays in perhaps the toughest conference in 5A as Carl Albert, El Reno, and Deer Creek are hosting a regional.

McAlester is ranked third in the state with a 28-7 record and are one of the perennial programs in the state.

Game times and dates will be posted here as they become available this week.

The following is a list of regional’s starting with the overall No. 1 seed Carl Albert. The host team is listed first.

Carl Albert, Shawnee, Bishop McGuinness, Southeast
MacArthur, Altus, Ardmore, Capitol Hill
El Reno, Duncan, Northwest Classen, Noble
Deer Creek, Coweta, Chickasha, Western Heights
McAlester, Thomas Edison, Guthrie
Tahlequah, Durant, Booker T. Washington, Nathan Hale
Grove, Collinsville, Bishop Kelley, Will Rogers
Pryor, Skiatook, East Central, Memorial (Tulsa)

Cougars offense will challenge Jays defense

It has been well-known over the last several years that the Guthrie Football defense is one of the most physical defenses in the state and is always near the top of defensive stats and numbers. That same defense will be challenged by the Ada Cougars, Friday night, on Norris Field in another key district match-up.

Guthrie (3-1) and Ada (2-2) will both enter the game with 1-0 district records. The Jays are coming off a 41-7 home win over Deer Creek while Ada went on the road and shut-out Southeast 41-0 last week.

The Guthrie football program has been on the top shelf in Oklahoma high school football since 2002 with two state championships, but Ada has the program that has won more state championships than any other program with 19. To go with those titles, Ada has elite facilities, including an in-door facility for their outdoor programs.

The Cougars hold the 11-man record with 42 consecutive wins from 1993 to 1996. In the process, the Cougars won four straight state championships with three of those coming in Class 3A and the last title in Class 5A.

The 2010 Cougars offense averages over 260 yards rushing the football, and still yet average over 100 yards passing the ball. However, Guthrie’s defense ranks as the best in 5A against the run. Not only the best, but a dominating best. The defense allows 73-yards rushing per game with Bishop Kelley coming in at second against the run by holding opponents to 132-yards.

The Ada ground game is controlled by junior running back Nathan Blakely (6’3, 191) and sophomore quarterback Wyatt Robson (6’1, 175). The Coug’s like to use motion and eventually play action to set up their offense. Blakely and Robson have combined for 10 rushing touchdowns. Blakely has 65-carries for 410 yards as full back and former quarterback Chase Bowker (6’0, 184) provides the lead block.

Robson, who is a top-notch golfer, has completed 23-of-38 passes for 415 yards. The top receivers for Ada are seniors Nick Anderson (6’3, 185) and Skylar Alexander (5’10, 157).

The Ada play-makers are complimented by their offensive line. Although, they average 238 pounds across the way, the linemen are quick off the ball and with a mixture of the Jays past opponents will be a stiff challenge for the Jays front seven. In addition, Randy Armstrong (6’4, 226), Ada’s tight-end, compliments the run game.

Felix Scott (33), John Clark (44), Kentrell Brothers (30), and Vincent Norris (34) surrond the Ponca City quarterback.

Ada enters Friday’s game on a 2-game winning streak with wins over U.S. Grant and Southeast. The Coug’s dropped their first two games of the season to familiar opponents.

Ardmore, who Ada plays every year to begin the season, down Ada 28-7 and dropped their home opener to McAlester 21-20. Ada had McAlester down 20-7 with 4:00 left in the game, but the Buffalo’s rallied in the end to remain the only undefeated team in Class 5A.

Third year head coach Matt Weber and the Cougars are coming off a 7-4 season. On Weber’s sideline is his dad and Oklahoma coaching legend Joe Weber. Joe Weber, won two state championships, at Davis High School, with a record of 136-31.

ShowMeMizzou spoke with 2011 LB prospect Kentrell Brothers 6’1″ 215 Guthrie (OK) about how his recruitment’s been going, and where Missouri stands with him.

Brothers has recently taken official visits to Arizona State and Washington, and said that he was impressed with both places. He’s planning to visit Missouri for the Colorado game, and wants to visit some of the other schools on his list, as well.

That list includes Kansas State, Iowa State, Tulsa, and Vanderbilt, among others. Brothers said that he’s been hearing from all of those schools regularly, including Missouri, and that he doesn’t have a current leader.

“All of the schools who have offered me are pretty much even,” said Brothers.

He went on to say that he doesn’t really have a time-table for making a decision, but that he would like to try to narrow things down a little before too long.

Brother’s high school team is 3-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of a school from a higher (6A) classification. Kentrell informed ShowMeMizzou that he has 8 QB sacks so far this season, and that he’s playing WR on offense, as well as OLB.

ShowMeMizzou will continue to follow Kentrell Brother’s recruitment.

Brothers Seeking Focus

“I don’t have a top five right now and whenever I feel that I know what list of schools it is that I like, and schools that I can see myself going to, that’s when I’ll know what my top five is,” Kentrell Brothers said. “Distance is not really important to me or part of my decision. I know my family will come and see me regardless of wherever I go. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can…”

Kentrell Brothers, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound three-star linebacker/wide receiver from Guthrie, Okla., remains without a top five group of favorites but has already taken two official visits to both Washington and Arizona State.

“I don’t have a top five right now and whenever I feel that I know what list of schools it is that I like, and schools that I can see myself going to, that’s when I’ll know what my top five is,” he said.

“Right now the schools that are recruiting me the hardest are Washington, Iowa State, Missouri, Tulsa and Vanderbilt,” he said. “They all call me every week and are always sending me mail – you know, the basic stuff they all do to show that they’re interested in me.

“Distance is not really important to me or part of my decision,” he added. “I know my family will come and see me regardless of wherever I go.”

However, with two trips in the books for Brothers, he still does not know if either UW or ASU can be included amongst his true favorites.

“I had a great time on both of those visits,” he said. “They were the first two schools that came to mind when it was time to set up trip dates. And I really like coach (Johnny) Nansen (special teams/recruiting/defensive line) from Washington, and coach (Trent) Bray (linebackers) from Arizona State.

“The food was amazing at Washington – that’s for sure,” Brothers said. “I also liked the stadium and how shaky it all got as the crowd got louder. It was also good to hang with the players before and after the game.

“I was also at ASU a little longer than my trip to Washington,” he said. “All the coaches there were cool and I really liked all the linebackers there. The way they all treated me was just great.

“But really, I only took those two visits because of how far away they are,” he said. “If I can drive to a school, then I will probably end up taking an unofficial visit there. And I know I’m going to get out to Missouri when they play Oklahoma – I just don’t know if it’s going to be an official or unofficial visit at this point.”

The Sooners are another team Brothers would like to see offer.

“I haven’t been offered by Oklahoma and if they did offer me, I’d definitely consider them because they’re close to home and a very well-known program.

“But overall, I still don’t have a leader out of any of these schools, and hopefully in the next few weeks I can figure that out.”

Brothers says he has tallied 39 tackles, eight sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 10 tackles for loss this season. He also reports 16 receptions for 429 yards and five touchdowns while playing at both the wide receiver and tight end positions for his school.

“I really like playing both offense and defense, and I’ve gotten a lot faster over the years so I could be a wide receiver/running back-type. It’s just hard to say what I’d prefer playing in college,” he said.

“Washington is the one school that wants me at offense, but they like me at linebacker as well.”

Guthrie (3-1) will play Ada High on Friday.

Brothers reports a 3.4 GPA and a 20 on the ACT with plans to possibly retake the test on Oct. 23.

Jays and Cougars highlight district 5A-1 in Week 5

Week 4 and the first week of district play went as expected in Class 5A with winners and losers, and again this week the Jays will be involved in the top game of the district 5A-1.

The Jays used the first half last week to take the air out of the Deer Creek Antlers en route to a 41-7 win. In turn, Guthrie got a key win that may aid in hosting a first round game and perhaps two at Jelsma.

The district champion receives a first round playoff game at home and with a win would host a second round game as well. The district runner-up would than host a first round game, but would be on the road if they were to prevail in the first round. The third and fourth place team will be on the road for the first two weeks as long as they survive. The state semi-finals and championship game are played on neutral sites.

Guthrie along with Ada, Carl Albert, and Deer Creek are projected as the top four teams to move on to the playoffs from 5A-1. In what order? Not sure, but if the Jays were to get their first win on the road this season, in Ada, it is all but certain they will finish in either of the top two spots.

Here is how the 5A-1 looks after Week 4:

School Dist All PF PA +/-
Carl Albert    1-0 3-1 136 34 15
Guthrie 1-0 3-1 137 50 15
Ada 1-0 2-2 131 55 15
El Reno 1-0 2-2 97 81 15
Southeast 0-1 3-1 97 67 -15
Deer Creek 0-1 2-2 103 101 -15
Noble 0-1 0-3 21 122 -15
Western Heights 0-1 0-4 52 169 -15

Here are the games in Week 5 of 5A-2:
Last Week’s Predictions were 3-0

Guthrie (3-1) at Ada (2-2)

The Ada Cougars appear to be a playoff team and that should come at no surprise for the Jays. Guthrie’s first four of five opponents are expected to make the playoffs. The Cougars are rich in tradition and will look to control the ground game and keep the ball out of the hands of the BlueJay balance offense attack.

Prediction: You can listen to the game on 105.1 FM, or on Guthrie Sports Page

El Reno (2-2) at Carl Albert (3-1)

A rematch of last years state semi final game where the Titans controlled the game from the beginning on their way to a 44-7 blowout win. Both teams lost key members to those squads, but more so on the El Reno side.

The Titans appear they are going to be 3-0 in district play heading into week seven’s showdown with Guthrie.

Prediction: Carl Albert 41, El Reno 6

Western Heights (0-4) at Noble (0-3)

The good news is someone is going to get their first win of the season. However, the bad news is the loser of this game may be looking at not winning a game this season. Huge game in Cleveland County.

Prediction: Noble 20, Western Heights 7

Southeat (3-1) at Deer Creek. (2-2)

Southeast was the 31st school in 5A to drop their first game of the season. However, their schedule continues stiffen. The Antlers are looking to get back in the win column and may not be very nice guests when the Spartans visit. Deer Creek wants to get the Guthrie loss behind them and they do.

Prediction: Deer Creek 35, Southeast 7

Guthrie short-handed in Stillwater

Despite missing one of their key components, the Guthrie boys Cross Country team competed well in the 4A/5A 3-mile run at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree last Saturday in Stillwater.

The Jays were without the services of Zack Cates, who was out due to having his wisdom teeth removed. Cates is expected back this week in time for their race at Holland Hall on Saturday.

Guthrie finished the run with three medalists. Junior Jonathan Ogan ran a 17:15 and was good enough for a third place finish, Hunter Sallee was 11th overall in 17:36, and Walker Cross was good enough for 18th with a time of 17:54. Deer Creek’s Taler Buck took the top individual honor with a time of 16:51.

Bishop McGuinness showed why they will be the favorites to win the 5A State meet next month by winning the team championship trophy in comfortable fashion. The Irish finish with 54 points and were followed by Deer Creek (87), Bishop Kelley (163), and Guthrie (176).

Adam Beery and Leroy Watts also competed in the 3-mile run. However, the Jays may have found some help. Coach Clay Tarter found Caleb Murillo and asked him to run in the junior varsity meet. Murillo did, and ran a respectable 18:36 in his first run of the year and finished 20th overall. That time, if he ran in the varsity run, would have been good for 36th place and would have placed the Jays in the top three.

Taylor Self and Kyle Owens competed with Murillo in the race. The Lady Jays were represented by Lauren Toney, who ran he personal best 14:59 in the 3200 meter run.

The Guthrie football program pulled off another convincing win over a 5A opponent with a 41-7 win over Deer Creek to begin district play. The Jays started the season with a 25-0 win over highly ranked Duncan. Both wins came inside Jelsma Stadium.

Here is how the Jays opponents did in Week 4

Duncan 55, Capitol Hill 0

Duncan took the opening kick and stormed down 55 yards on five plays to begin the night where the Demons did not need much from their starters. The Demons improved to 2-2 and 1-0 in 5A-2 district play.

Ponca City 14, Enid 40

Enid picked up their fifth straight win over the Wildcats despite trailing early. The Plainsmen got a boost on the ground with Jonathan Burton’s 143 yards and Cody Lee’s season-high 73 yards.

Ada 41, Southeast 0

The Southeast Spartans had people talking this week as one of the two undefeated teams in Class 5A, but the Cougars put a stop to the talk by blowing out the Spartans and pitching a shut-out. Ada improves to 2-2 on the season.

Noble 7, El Reno 27

Noble hit the score board first, but the Indians put 27 unanswered points on the board to go 1-0 in district play. Despite 12 penalties, El Reno managed 195 rushing yards. El Reno improves to 2-2 while remains winless at 0-3.

Carl Albert 50, Western Heights 6

It was expected and it happened as Carl Albert rolled their way to their third win of the year. The Titans erupted for 30 points in the second quarter. Five different Titans scored to send the Jets to an 0-4 start.

Jays soar above Antlers in convincing blow-out win

The state’s largest newspaper and many other media outlets had Guthrie and Deer Creek as one of the premier games in the state for Week 4 of the high school football season, but Guthrie put a quick damper on that notion.

Devonte McCully has 8 catches for 214 yards and 5 touchdown scores in the last two weeks. Photo By: Jarrett George

The Jays jumped out to a 24-0 first quarter led and a 41-0 halftime score to take the air out of any gesture of a four quarter game. The Jays finished with 387 yards of offense in the first half alone and in the process held the Antlers to just 9-yards of offense in the first 24 minutes.

Deer Creek opened the third quarter with a 7-play scoring drive for the only points in the second half as Guthrie improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in district play with a 41-7 win. Deer Creek falls to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in 5A-1.

With the win, Guthrie leads the series with Deer Creek 4-2 overall that dates back to 2004. In the last three games of the series, the Jays have won by a combine score of 134-7. The Jays defense had shut-out the Antlers in 10 straight quarters.

On the game’s opening possession, Guthrie went down the field on an 80 yard drive on 9 plays and was capped off by a Derrick Kelley 4-yard touchdown score. The senior running back took advantage of a huge hole that was created on the left side by Blake Belcher and Hayden Seifert. Kelley, who was filling in for injured Alphonso Wilcots, finished the night with 23 carries for 83-yards and two touchdown scores. Despite missing the extra point, Guthrie immediately set the tone.

On Deer Creek’s opening possession, junior linebacker Landry Chappell forced an Antlers fumble on the second play from scrimmage with senior Marcus Ware pouncing on the ball to give the Jays a short field to work with. In result, Guthrie took advantage on the first play.

Jays quarterback Bryan Dutton took off on the right side where he found a huge gap, that was created by Malachi Galbraith and Bryce Sullivan, and sprinted in for the 54-yard score. This time the extra point was good and with 7:49 left in the opening quarter Guthrie had built a 13-0 lead.

Dutton was named the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game as the sophomore threw for 315 yards on 16-of-26 passing, including three passing scores all to senior wide out Devonte McCully.

McCully’s first TD grab resulted in a 67-yard score when he took the screen pass from Dutton and took off down the field. The drive was aided by two crucial penalties by Deer Creek that kept the Guthrie drive alive. Regardless, the Jays had built up a 27-0 first quarter cushion.

The Dutton to McCully connection continued in the second quarter when Dutton lobbed the pass into the North end zone and found McCully, who used his 6’6 frame to go over two Antlers for the score to increase the lead, 34-0, with 6:56 to play til the half.

The final score of the night for McCully came just before the half when Dutton hit the senior from 13-yards out to finalize the Jays scoring for the evening. McCully finished the night with 5-receptions for 118 yards and three touchdowns. He has brought in five touchdowns in the last two weeks.

Senior play maker Kentrell Brothers finished the night with over 100 yards receiving as well with 106 total on six catches.

In the end, the Guthrie offense exploded for 442 yards of offense while holding Deer Creek to 123 yards of offense. Entering the game, Deer Creek had averaged 301 yards of offense.

The Jays now must refocus as they hit the road in search of their first road victory this season as they travel to Ada, who shut-out Southeast 41-0 Friday night, for another key 5A-1 district match-up.

Many expect Guthrie, Carl Albert, Deer Creek, and Ada to make the playoffs out of the district. A Guthrie win could very well almost guarantee a home playoff game for Week 1 of the playoffs.
