Arkansas coach: Brothers is very coachable

July 30, 2010 1 comment

Guthrie’s senior Kentrell Brothers recently attended University of Arkansas’s prospect camp on July 17th and received perhaps the highest compliment a player can receive.

“I like you because you’re coachable,” Arkansas assistant coach John L. Smith said.

While an offer has not come down from the ‘Hogs, Brothers remains optimistic.

“They said to stay in touch.” said Brothers.”I think they’ll offer me. I hope they do.”

Coming Soon: Junior Jays Building of Champions

Bookmark and Share

Generous donations and time dedication have been major contributions to the Guthrie Football program over the years, and it continues to make its way through the Junior High program.

Brad Davenport and Guthrie coaches begin work on the 7th grade locker room Thursday morning.

Faver Alternative principal Pat Hughes had a great suggestion to head football coach Rafe Watkins. Let’s use the empty annex building on the grounds for the junior high football program. However, the Junior Jays Building of Champions plans still needed some assistance.

The program then received donations from Barry Anderson with Farmers and Merchants Bank, Keith Ventris with Oklahoma State Bank, and Laverne Dowding with BancFirst to help assist the project.

“We would really like to thank the banks for their generosity and continued support that they have given us over the years,” Watkins said.

The Junior Jays Building of Champions is just north of the junior high practice field, on the Faver Alternative School grounds, on Perkins road.

Soon this room will be transformed into the coaches office for Junior High football.

In addition to the fund donations, Brad Davenport, a local carpenter, is dedicating his time to help construct the inside projects. These projects include lockers and benches for the student athletes.

“Brad has been a huge asset in this project and we certainly do appreciate his expertise and help,” 8th grade head coach Jeff Ball said.

Watkins, Ball, and other coaches, Jason Rice, Bryan Couch, Casey Porter, and Seth Morgan, have donated their time and efforts with the project and construction.

The four room building will allow for a 7th grade locker room, an 8th grade locker room, a film room, and a coaches room. The former school building also includes bathrooms and storage space for all the players, coaches, and trainers.

“We only had 20 lockers (at the junior high) that worked, so the kids would just pile their equipment on the floor each day before school and after school. They would get dressed at the junior high and then we would bus them over to the practice field,” Ball said. “Now we can bus them over so they can get dressed at the new facilities. It will also help keep their equipment in one place.”

The Junior Jays Building of Champions building will be decorated on the inside with the Guthrie logo “G” and other signs throughout the building thanks to Ryan Codding. Codding is the President of the Central Oklahoma Little League Football association.

The donations do not stop there as the Tyler Nichols Heart of a Champion Foundation, headed by Phil Nichols, is donating a projector to the program for the use of watching game film.

“Overall, it is going be a great attribute to our program and I am pleased to have so many generous people who have helped us with this building.” Ball said.

Guthrie Softball gearing up for first practice

The Guthrie Lady Jays high school and junior high softball teams will kick-start their season Monday, August 2nd, with their first practice of the 2010 season.

Brian Jackson is set to begin his second season as the Lady Jays skipper. Jackson said the junior high will start their practice’s at 8am and the high school to follow at 10am.

The high school and junior varsity will participate in two scrimmages beginning with McGuinness, on the road, on August 5th, and turn around the next day and entertain Kingfisher at home. Both exhibitions are set for a 4:00 first pitch.

The high school’s first game of the season will be August 10th when the Harrah Panthers come to town before heading to the Cushing Tournament for the three-day event. Last year the Lady Jays won their first two games of the season, including Jackson’s first as the head coach.

The Junior Jays do not start their regular season until August 16th, but begin the season with a three game home stand. Sondra Danner returns back to coach the team.

East slides past the West in All State baseball game

July 28, 2010 3 comments

Guthrie’s Jaden Chappell and John Cotton took their cuts in the Oklahoma Coaches Association Large School All State baseball game, but it was the East coming away with a 5-3 win at Oral Robert’s J.L. Johnson Stadium.

The East has now won four consecutive games over the West with Monday night’s win.

The West had their opportunity in the 6th inning when they loaded the bases with just one out, but Chandler’s Jonathan Gray was able to get out of the jam to help secure the win.

Chappell played the full seven innings at first base and Cotton played in the final few innings in left field. Chappell now takes his game to Cowley County while Cotton will attend Southwestern, in Weatherford.

5A All Vype preseason team includes two from Guthrie

The Guthrie BlueJay defense has been one of the tops in Class 5A and the high expectations are expected to return in 2010. Those expectations will be aided by Landry Chappell and Kentrell Brothers.

Vype Magazine recognized the two Jays on their 5A All Vype Preseason defensive team. Deer Creek is the only other school to have two players to  represent the defense.

Brothers, an incoming senior, led the state with 17 sacks, in addition to his 15 sacks his sophomore season. He collected 95 stops to go along with four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Chappell, who is preparing for his junior season, finished last season with 177  that ranked him seventh in the entire state. Chappell came on as a freshmen and played an important role, but his role was majorly increased last season.

“This season you can expect me to work harder than I ever have in the previous three seasons,” Brothers told the magazine. “We have a hard-working team that plays with heart. Expect a battle every game.”
