Brothers remains Top 5 player in Oklahoma

In his junior season Brothers piled up 95 tackles, a state's best 17 sacks, four interceptions, and a fumble recovery. On offense he had 62 catches for 1,122 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Kentrell Brothers, who this past weekend visit Tulsa University, remains a top five player in the state according to The Oklahoman.

The senior-to-be play maker has 12 official Division I school offers.

Brothers, who is being recruited as a linebacker and more than likely will play defense in college, was the Jays first wide receiver to collect over 1,ooo yards receiving in a single season his junior year.

Last week Brothers picked up his first Southeastern Conference offer from Vanderbilt. He now holds offers (in order of offer) from Missouri, Duke, Syracuse, Kansas State, Baylor, Iowa State, Tulsa, Washington, Connecticut, Kansas, Arizona, and Vanderbilt.

The Oklahoman’s Top 30.

Western Heights DJ Taylor poured in 13 with Hall as Putnam City’s Brian Brown had a team high 20 points.

Robinson, Galbraith earn Big All City honors

Robinson and Galbraith were named to the Big All City Track team.

Senor-to-be Emmanuel Robinson and sophomore-to-be Rosetta Galbraith were named to The Oklahoman’s Big All City first team and All Track team for their accomplishment’s in the 2010 track season.

Guthrie graduates Rachel Roberts, Chaunsey Dumas, and Jason Ogan were also named to the Honorable Mention list.

Robinson, who has helped the Guthrie program to back-to-back 5A state championships, won both the 100 meters and 110 hurdles at this year’s 5A state meet and as a sophomore brought home gold at the 2009 State meet in the 110 hurdles. He was a member of the Jays 4 x 100 state winning relay team that witness the foursome setting a school record with a 41.77 time.

Galbraith came sprinting on the scene as a freshmen and earned first team in the hurdles and made the All Track roster in the 100 hurdles. She finished as the 5A state runner-up in the hurdles.

Ogan, who was instrumental in the Jays Cross Country team winning the 5A state title, was honored in the 1600 meter while Roberts was awarded in the 3200 meter. Ogan will move his talents to Oklahoma Baptist University and Roberts will attend Harding University next fall.

Dumas, who was named to the 200 meter honorable mention list, won several events throughout the year, including the 200 meter state championship and was part of the 4 x 100 relay school record team. He will visit the University of Oklahoma as he prepares to move his talents to the next level.

Jays favorite to win football district title?

Bookmark and Share

Is it not amazing how one season of high school football can be different from the next? It was gloom and doom by a good part of BlueJay fans last season after an 0-2 start, but quickly got back on the wagon and rode the team to the state semi’s and almost to the title game.

Nothing will change in the 2010 season when the Guthrie BlueJays and Carl Albert Titans fight for the top spot in the district.

Now with spring drills behind, Guthrie will get set for the 2010 season in which they will be the favorite to win the Class 5A, District 1 title.

Yes, Carl Albert remains in the district and yes the Jays have just one district title, in 2007, in recent memory, and yes the Titans are coming off yet another state championship. Oh, of course, I remember the Titans embarrassing the Jays early and often last year on the Jays home sod. How could I forget?

Both the Jays and Titans have holes they must plug-in, but the Titans have more skill positions to fill in by September. Granted those players are going to be very athletic, untested, but athletic and will fill in as other players have been doing for the last two decades.

I am not sure Rafe Watkins or Gary Rose wants to be picked as the favorite, but I know it does not bother them either. I imagine Rose will pick Guthrie and Watkins will pick Carl Albert to win the district. I do know this, Rafe will tell me that Carl Albert deserves the top spot in the district and in Class 5A until someone proves it otherwise. Hard to argue against that.

Rose is great when it comes to down playing his team early in the season and even midway through the season, and he is usually right. He knows what it takes in Week 11 thru 14 to win and weeks 1-10 are just a dress rehearsal.

Titans must replace the all-world quarterback in J.T. Realmuto, who is the best Titan QB I have seen play wearing the CA logo, on offense along with Tre Porter. The offense will not be running dry at running back with Kenton Whittington returning.

Watkins and the Jays make winning the district one of their goals every season. They do not hide from what they want to achieve and will be wanting their second district title.

The Guthrie offense will returned a more experienced offensive line, a quarterback that has proven he is willing to fight every play, and a play maker like Kentrell Brothers will help the Jays to achieve that goal.

Jays and Titans will square off on October 15th in Midwest City.

The Guthrie defense returns a lot of tackles with Brothers, Landry Chappell, and Luke Davis. Felix Scott brings the party back for his senior year.

The Jays must fill their holes at nose guard and both cornerback spots. Someone will have to fill the space that Jaden Chappell controlled, the running game has to improve, but if the Jays get the play from Derrick Kelly like he did in the Bixby game that will be plenty, but he will need some help from Alfonso Wilcots and perhaps Davis.

Now its obvious that being the favorite does not mean you automatically win the district and on the night of November 5th it turns out that Carl Albert won the district would I be surprised? HECK NO!

Recruiting: Busy Day At Guthrie

Guthrie High School spring football wrapped up on Friday and just as there has been all spring there were college coaches walking around, some sitting in the shade, and all observing. Most were there to see the Blue Jays standout wide receiver and linebacker prospect Kentrell Brothers.

Kentrell Brothers picked up his first SEC offer from Vanderbilt to increase his offer sheet to 12.

OU offensive line coach James Patton was in Guthrie to see junior-to-be offensive tackle Blake Belcher. There will be a number of coaches that will continue to eyeball that big developing young man.

Iowa State had a coach at the practice and Kansas State assistant Joe Bob Clements was also there, the latter two no doubt there to see Brothers. It’s been that way all spring with the likes of Oklahoma State, Mississippi, Oregon State, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Washington, Tulsa, Baylor, Duke, and more coming to Guthrie.

“My son is 12 and it didn’t take him very long because he said, ‘Dad, you must be pretty good this year because there have been a lot of coaches coming around,’” said Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins, citing the wisdom of his son.

“It sometimes becomes a hassle for guys to get in touch with me and for us to get all the transcripts and the video that they need, but you are always tickled to death when people are coming by because you know you’ve got some good players and we have some good players for the coming year and for the following year. We were very fortunate to have a lot of coaches in different colored shirts around,” Watkins added.

Watkins is partial to Brothers, and who wouldn’t be? I call him my Wes Welker of the 2011 recruiting class. The reason is that while he is 6-2, 205 and runs a 4,6-to-4.7 in the forty. He is faster in pads on the football field when he is chasing down quarterbacks or running backs or when he is running away from opposing corners and safeties after catching the ball on offense.

“He is not the best athlete in the state next year, but I will put him up against anybody as a football player,” said Watkins. “He plays every down for us and his motor goes first play and the 90th play.

“We’ve only got him off two things on special teams and we’re probably going to put him on those because we’ve just got one more year with him and we’re going to ride that horse as long as we can. He’s a great kid and has good grades. He has already been accepted to Duke, Tulsa, and Baylor, and those are pretty good academic schools and that is nice for him.”

“I want to get an education,” said Brothers of his academic side. “My sister is going to graduate from college, but I do want to graduate from college because I will be the first in my family to do that. That is my main goal in college.”

“That shows the hard work he has put in, not only on the football field but also in the classroom and we all know that is the most important thing,” added Watkins.”

It is the most important thing in life, but in recruiting players it doesn’t quite rank up there with size, speed, and ability. Recruiting has been fun for Kentrell. He has noticed the coaches, but he has his head on straight. The coaches have continued to come around and some schools like in-state Big 12 teams, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma, have looked but not offered yet. In fact, he told us there hasn’t been a new offer recently.

“Not recently, I’m up to 10 now and everything is going good for me right now,” said Brothers. “It’s a little stressful and it’s a little hard on me. It’s not that I want it to stop because I’m pretty happy getting all the attention but it is getting stressful and I can see that I will want it to come to a stop at some point.”

The list is impressive as it includes Washington, Missouri, Duke, Arizona, UConn, Syracuse, Kansas State, Tulsa, Baylor, and Iowa State. Oregon State and Wisconsin are expected to be added soon. He did not do anything to diminish his standing in spring football as he knew the schemes, executed well, and played hard.

“Kentrell has become a great player, but what I’m proud of is now he is becoming a leader,” said Watkins of a player that caught 62 passes for 1,122 yards and 12 touchdowns and had a Class 5A tops 17 sacks on defense.

“We’ve had some great leaders ahead of him and now he has stepped into that role and that’s what we needed him badly to do. I see great things in his future and fortunately, he’s got 12 or 13 Division I offers and I think more will come in as the summer and the season go along.”

“Dutton, our freshman quarterback, has grown up a lot and you can expect a lot out of him,” stated Brothers in discussing the Guthrie team, one of several favorites to win next season in Oklahoma Class 5A.

“Our Sam linebacker, Landon Chappell, he was a sophomore last year, and he led the team in tackles and he will be phenomenal next season. Our front line has grown up and done a great job in off season and we will be bigger and stronger next season. We’re looking to come out and tear it up and get better,” Brothers added.

Recently, Guthrie won the Class 5A boys track state championship, and while Brothers did not contribute he was asked to try the high jump, an event he last competed in during junior high. The rumor was he did well but had a family conflict with the regional meet. Brothers downplayed it.

“Yeah, but I didn’t do too good,” said Brothers in a very humble manner. “I went out there and basically what I did was support the team. They came out victorious without needing me. I didn’t do too bad, but I didn’t do as well as I could have. I also forgot my track shoes and I was jumping in some big boats (basketball shoes).”

Now the question is when will this talented Oklahoma standout make his college decision? The other question is, will Tulsa be his only in-state choice? Will Brothers make a camp appearance at Oklahoma State or OU this summer that illuminates an offer from either school?

“I want to make that decision before the season starts, but if I can’t I will take the time to think it out a little more,” explained Brothers. “If it has to wait until after football season then it will wait until after football season.

“I am pretty sure I am going to go to some camps. I know I have some lined up, but I don’t know who exactly. I am looking forward to taking some visits this summer and all that.”

Publisher Note: This story was edited on May 26th.

In perhaps one of the toughest high school baseball conference’s in the state of Oklahoma, the Guthrie BlueJays landed eight Jays on the Suburban Conference post season honors list.

The Guthrie seniors celebrated Senior Night in their final regular season game at Squires Field.

Seniors John Cotton, Jaden Chappell, and Corbin Crockett headline the list on the first team. Senior’s Dustin Bowman and Zac Bobo were named to the second team. Sophomore Hayden Seifert, Luke Davis, and Landry Chappell as well as freshmen Bryan Dutton was mentioned as honorable mention.

Carl Albert’s J.T. Realmuto, who will be a member of the Oklahoma State Cowboys next spring, was named Player of the Year while Deer Creek’s Cale Coshow, who will play for the Oklahoma Sooners next year, was named the conference Pitcher of the Year. The Newcomer of the Year was Carl Albert’s Alex Polsoun, who narrowed out Dutton for the honor.

Cotton finished his BlueJay career with 37 home runs and is believed to hit more in a career then any other Guthrie player. Cotton was named as a reserve to last years team batted .426 to go with 14 round trippers.

Despite missing a good portion of the season, Crockett was named first team with his .453 batting average. Crockett was labeled as Guthrie’s No. 1 pitcher and utilized his speed in the lead off position.

Jaden Chappell, who will be a member of the Cowley County Tigers next spring, finished his career with 30 home runs and batted .449 in his senior campaign. The four-year starter played on the corners at first and third base.

Bowman made a switch from the left handers batter’s box to the right side and completed what his head coach Jon Chappell said a “great” season for the Jays.

Bobo was a consistent force on the mound for Guthrie and finished with a 7-3 pitching record.

The three sophomores Davis, Landry Chappell, and Seifert were also recently named to the sophomore Sun Belt teams and will play in the classic in June.
