Jays make short work of Wolves

No one timed Guthrie head baseball coach Jon Chappell, Tuesday evening, but the skipper may have spent more time on the field maintaining the yard then his ball club did playing.

Senior John Cotton ripped his 7th home run of the season in a 9-1 win over Shawnee. Cotton had 16 big flies a season ago.

The Jays collected 9 runs on 13 hits and run ruled the Class 6A Shawnee Wolves, 9-1, in four and a half innings. Game time was a total of 57 minutes as eight Jays collected at least one hit.

Senior John Cotton lead the way and did a lot in the 57 minutes. Cotton picked up the pitching win, collected two hits, smashed his seventh home run of the season, and picked up four RBIs.

Bryan Dutton and Luke Davis started the first inning with hits and was cleared off the bases with a Hayden Seifert two run double. Fellow sophomore Landry Chappell followed that up with a RBI double to give the Jays a 3-0 lead after one.

Senior outfielder Dustin Bowman gave Guthrie their third double with a smash off the right field wall. Scott Pickle then picked up a single, but was cleared off the bases on a double play. Davis, who scored three runs, then drew a base on ball and came across on Cotton’s double to go up 5-0.

In the fourth inning, Guthrie collected four runs, in which, three came off the bat of Cotton and his smash to dead center field that was a no brainer. Davis collected the other RBI and along with Cotton, Bowman, and Seifert each had two hits.

Guthrie improves to 15-6 and has won two games in a row and improves to 9-0 in the Suburban Conference. Next up is Northwest Classen, on Thursday, before hosting McGuinness and Ponca City on Saturday.
