Guthrie invades local sports show

April 30, 2010 Leave a comment

The Oklahoma High School Sports Express (OHSSE) continues to be the leader for high school sports in the Sooner State and boy are they loving some Guthrie this week.

Van Shea Iven’s OHSSE airs Sunday nights on FOX25 at 10:30 and this week will have plenty of BlueJay highlights.

The show will give highlights of the Jays baseball game with Deer Creek in the finals of the East-West Classic. I imagine Jaden Chappell’s grand slam will make the cut?

The Express traveled to Edmond for the Edmond Track Classic. I imagine freshmen sensation Rosetta Gailbraith will make an appearance mixed in with some BlueJay sprinters.

Highlighting the show will be the McDonald Scholar Athlete of the Week featuring Guthrie’s Rachel Roberts.

“May change the name of the show to the Guthrie High School Sports Express,” I believe a joking Van Shea said.

For a sneak peek of the show and some past highlights visit the Express at: http://ohsse.com/

OHSEE is a must see for all high school fans, but this week is a must see for all Guthrian’s.

Former Guthrie High School stand-out and 2009 graduate Donte’ Foster is turning over the basketball jersey for shoulder pads and a face mask.

Donte' Foster will have four seasons of eligibility with the Ohio Bobcats football team.

Foster, a GHS three-sport all-star, will join the Ohio Bobcats’ football team this fall announced by head coach Frank Solich.

Read Chris Evans column: Foster moving on so we can move on

Foster (6’3, 180), who played basketball this year at Seminole State College, will have four years of football eligibility.“On the field, Donté will be a big addition to our wide receiver corps and he’s also proven to be an exemplary individual off the field as well,” Solich told the Ohio media relations department. “We’re very excited to have Donté in Athens and we think he has a tremendous future here.”

While at Guthrie High School, Foster was named All-Oklahoma as a senior after leading Class 5A in receiving yards and earned all-star honors from the OFBCA (Oklahoma Football Coaches Association) and CoachesAid.com, a website and media outlet dedicated to high school sports coverage since 1999. He was also a quarterfinalist for Oklahoma’s Mr. Football honor during his senior season. As a junior, Foster, who played for head coach Rafe Watkins, helped lead the BlueJays to a Class 5A state title. During his junior and senior seasons at Guthrie, Foster amassed 80 catches for 1,408 yards with 25 touchdown catches. He also totaled 163 yards on the ground for three more scores.

On the hardwood, Foster began his career with a bang when he was named
Oklahoma’s Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. Under the leadership of head
coach Pete Paparonios, he then claimed All-Oklahoma honors three times
(sophomore, junior, senior) and was named Class 5A Player of the Year as a
junior. He was also voted Most Valuable Player of the state playoffs as a
senior, where he averaged a double-double. His Guthrie BlueJays won the
Class 5A state title during both his junior and senior campaigns.

Foster was a member of one football, two basketball, and one track state championship team at Guthrie.

Foster made national fame with his buzzer beating shot with his back toward the goal. To view the shot and his incredible one-handed football catch click here

At Seminole State, Foster averaged 12.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.8 assists per contest from his guard position. He led the Trojans to the finals of the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Region 2 Tournament, earning All-Tournament honors in the process.

A four-year member of Guthrie’s FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and National Honor Society, Foster also excelled in track and field. He was Class 5A’s three-time (sophomore, junior, senior) state champion in the high jump, where he cleared seven feet during his senior season. He also earned All-Oklahoma honors all three of those years.

The Bobcats, fresh off their second MAC East title and bowl appearance  for the last four years, will open their 2010 slate on Saturday, Sept. 4 against Wofford in Peden Stadium.

McDonald to be a Maverick

BJ McDonald will play college basketball at Northern Oklahoma College.

Guthrie senior BJ McDonald will continue playing basketball beyond his high school days.

McDonald confirmed that he will lace his high tops up when he plays for Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma.

NOC was 9-21 a season ago and plays in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The head coach is Brett Weiberg, who has been at Northern Oklahoma College since 2005.  He was an assistant coach at Northern from 2002-2005.  In 2008-2009, the Mavericks posted a record of 19 wins vs 11 losses and was considered to be the most difficult overall schedule in Region II.  In 2008-2009, all four Maverick sophomores signed full scholarships at he university level (two Division I, one Division II, and one Division I NAIA).  More importantly, all four graduated from Northern with an Associates degree.  The Mavericks have graduated 100 percent of their sophomores in the three years that Coach Weiberg has been the head coach.

The 6’3 McDonald was a honoarable mention selection for the Suburban Conference in his senior campaign. He helped lead the Jays to back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009 and won a regional championship in his last three seasons as a BlueJay.

McDonald played in the USA Junior Nationals Basketball team and earned 2nd team All American honors for his play last summer.

McDonald’s older brother and former football and basketball stand-out, Kent McDonald, is a wide receiver for Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva.

On the week of the Class 5A track regional assignments being released, the Guthrie High School track team found themselves in another talented, deep 6A field by participating in the Edmond North meet.

Edmond North will be one of four 5A regional sites and where Guthrie will compete to try and qualify for the state tournament in mid May. The boys team are the defending 5A state champions after winning the school’s first title last spring, in Moore.

Freshmen Roseta Galbraith did her thing again by winning the 100 meters in a time of 15.52. Galbraith also was on the low side in the qualifying round with a sprint of 15.38. Galbraith took fifth place honors in the 100 meter dash against an upperclassmen field of 6A.

Senior Jaso Ogan ran a 4:39.17 in the 1600 meter run to give the Jays a point.

Junior Emmanuel Robinson was the faster runner in the 110 meter hurdles in the qualifying round, but third in the finals. Edmond Santa Fe’s Gunnar Nixon was .50 quicker with a time of 14.12.

Relay team sets school record, again

April 23, 2010 Leave a comment

Publisher’s Note: After breaking a Guthrie High School record Thursday afternoon at Edmond North, the BlueJay 4 x 100 team broke their own record the very next day again at Edmond North.

The team ran a 41.77 eclipsing yesterday’s run of 41.92. However, that was not the fastest time as Southmoore ran a ridiculous 41.40.

How fast is fast? The Jays time ranks 21st nationally and Southmoore’s is in the Top 10 nationally. Guthrie is one of the smallest schools on that national list.

Thursday’s original story:

Records were meant to be broken and it did not take long for one record of Guthrie High School’s track milestone’s to fall.

The team of Emmanuel Robinson, Dustin Bohanan, Chaunsey Dumas, and Alphonzo Wilcots ran a time of 41.92 in the 4 x 100 to set the school record at the Edmond North meet. The 41.92 is .03 quicker then the previous record that was set a year ago.

Wilcots has filled in on the team for the injured Corbin Crockett.

The Guthrie relay team has the second fastest time this season behind 6A’s Southmoore. According to head coach Gary Boxley both Southmoore and Guthrie have two of the top 50 times in the nation this season.

Last season Clayton Smith, Laron Parker, Dumas, and Robinson ran a 41.95.

In other events, Robinson and Dumas both qualified in the 100 meters today at the Edmond North track. Robinson, a junior, is ranked 13th nationally in the 110 hurdles for under classmen.

Senior Chelsey Dumas had a personal best throw of 47-02 in the shot put, but was only good for 9th place. However, he is currently ranked 6th in Class 5A.

The 4 x 800 relay team of Jason Ogan, Zac Cates, Colin Betchan, and Alex Dorio finished fourth overall.

For the Lady Jays, freshmen sensation Roseta Galbraith qualified for the 100 hurdles and 100 meters with a time of 12:52 in th sprint run.

Senior Rachel Roberts, who will run next season for Harding University, ran a personal best 12:20 since her surgery in mid March, and finished sixth overall in a stacked field in the 3200 meters.

The track returns back for the finals today at Edmond North starting at 3:30.

Guthrie collects 20th win of the season

April 22, 2010 Leave a comment

The Guthrie baseball team needed every at bat, Thursday afternoon, against Bishop McGuinness on the second day of the Deer Creek East-West Classic.

Jaden Chappell not only had a walk off base hit but added his 6th home run of the season against McGuinness.

And in the last at bat it was senior Jaden Chappell’s walk off base hit to right to conclude a seventh inning rally and a 7-6 win over the Irish.

The win gives Guthrie 20 wins this season and joins the top two ranked teams (Deer Creek and Carl Albert) in Class 5A with at least 20 wins. Collinsville is expected to be the fourth team today as well.

McGuinness had taken both games earlier this season with 6-5 and 18-2 wins in early March and April, respectively.

With McGuinness trailing 5-1 in their last at bat, the Irish put together five runs in the top of the seventh to take their first lead of the day at 6-5.

John Clark started the final inning as a pinch hitter and was hit by a pitch. Dustin Bowman then hit into a fielder’s choice for the first out and Bryan Dutton followed that with a fly out to right center.

Down to their final out, Guthrie’s John Cotton reached by an error to score Clark and tie the game at 6-all.

Senior Jaden Chappell, who homered with a blast to center field in the fourth inning to give his team a then 4-1 lead, gave the Jays the win when he took the pitch the other way to score the game winning run in Cotton. Chappell, the Cowley County Tiger to be next season, collected three hits on the afternoon and now has six homers on the season.

Cotton picked up the win on the mound. Cotton was coming off an impressive pitching outing in his last game against top ranked Deer Creek last week.

Dutton gave the Jays their first lead with a RBI double in the second and later added another RBI in the third.

Guthrie now stands at 2-0 in the Classic with yesterday’s win over Newcastle. Next up for the Jays will be the Durant Lions at noon Friday. Guthrie defeated Durant, 6-5, back on March 18th in the Southeast Shootout Tournament.

Head Coach Jon Chappell’s squad is now 4-3 against 6A schools, 9-1 in 5A games, 6-3 in 4A games, 1-1 in Class 3A, and 0-1 in independent games.

Class 5A Rankings (April 20)

1 Deer Creek 23-4
2 Carl Albert 22-3
3 Collinsville 19-4
4 Claremore 17-5
5 Bishop Kelley 17-9
6 Pryor 18-8
7 Chickasha 16-8
8 Guthrie 19-7
