Longhorns hook Jays for second loss of season
The Guthrie baseball team was shooting for a five game winning streak and a ticket to the championship game of the Southern Oklahoma Spring Break Shootout. However, Lone Grove had a different idea.
Pitcher and lead off man Cody Sewell proved to be the difference for Lone Grove as they finish Pool B with a 3-0 record with a 7-3 win Friday evening.

Sewell pitched seven complete innings and was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs.
Guthrie jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in their first at bat after Corbin Crockett drew a base on ball and then advance on a Bryan Dutton single before John Cotton picked up the RBI.
The Jays got at least one hit every inning outside of the third, but left 10 men on base.
The Longhorns tied the game at one in the fourth when they collected two hits and then took the lead for good with another run in the fifth when Sewell lead off with a double before stealing third.
Guthrie threaten in the sixth inning with the bases loaded with just one out, but were unable to push any runs across the plate.
Lone Grove put the game out of reach with five runs on two hits in the sixth inning. Guthrie, however, went down fighting by scoring two runs in the seventh, but left the bases loaded.
Six different Jays collected hits and were highlighted by Dutton’s two singles. Jaden Chappell and Hayden Seifert each had RBI singles. John Cotton and Dustin Bowman added singles in the final frame.
Guthrie is now 6-2 on the season and gets back into conference play with a road trip to Western Heights, on Monday, and then again with both teams, on Tuesday, at Squires Field. Both games are scheduled with a 4:30 start.
