Guthrie alum Josh Chappell is off to a good start for the University of Louisiana Monroe. The Warhawks play in the Sun Belt Conference and are currently 7-9 on the season.

Josh Chappell continues to make strides in Division I baseball. The former BlueJay is among the tops in teams stats.

Chappell, a 2005 Guthrie graduate and key contributor to the Jays 2002 state football championship, is batting .294 on the young season. He has started 14 of 15 games and is among the team leaders in batting, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, runs batted in, home runs, total bases, and stolen bases.

The Warhawk senior has 15 hits in 51 at bats with two of those going over the wall for home runs.

After leaving Guthrie, Chappell attend Seminole State and was named an Academic All-American following his sophomore after hitting .271 with seven doubles, one triple, four home runs and 30 RBIs on his way of helping guide Trojans to the regional championship game and to the regular season conference championship in 2007.

In his first season at Louisiana Monroe, he batted .305 while playing first base and designated hitter. Chappell hit in seven of his final 12 games and in his first Sun Belt game went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored against Western Kentucky.

Chappell, who is one of four Oklahoma players on the roster, and the Warhaks began the season with an eye opening win over Ole Miss.

Chappell’s younger brother Jaden currently plays on the Jays baseball team along with cousin’s Corbin Crockett and Landry Chappell. Josh’s uncle Jon is the head coach for Guthrie.

Landry Chappell has done some good things this athletic season on the gridiron and wrestling mat for the Guthrie BlueJays. Well, add another. This time on the ball diamond.

Landry Chappell's walk off homerun gave the Jays a 6-5 win over the Durant Lions.

Chappell launched his first homerun of the season over the right field wall and in doing so gave his team a 6-5 walk off win over the Durant Lions in game one of the Southern Oklahoma Spring Break Shootout being played in Lone Grove and Ardmore. The tournament is a wood bat tournament.

The Jays capitalized on the win with an 11-3 run rule of Broken Bow to sweep the double header. Guthrie will conclude pool play with Lone Grove Friday at 5:00. You can listen to the game on Guthrie Sports Page.

In the two games, Corbin Crockett and Luke Davis reached base 11 times out of 15 at bats combined. In fact, Davis reached base six times in a row.

Crockett picked up the hard fought win on the mound against Durant to improve to 2-1 on the season. Zac Bobo got his third win in game two for the Jays.

Crockett added a RBI triple in the fourth inning of game one and John Cotton had a three bag hit to score Davis in the third inning. Freshmen Bryan Dutton added two hits in the win over Durant.

Jon Chappell’s 9th ranked Jays have won a season high four games in a row and improves to 6-1 on the season. A win over Lone Grove assures the Jays the championship game, weather permitting, Saturday evening at 6:00.
